Hey everyone! Just like the title says. When I bought the gun, it had a full choke in the top barrel and a modified choke in the bottom barrel. I will be using it primarily for trap, and then want to use it for sporting clays and maybe 5 stand. Also, do I set the selector to shoot the top barrel first or the bottom one for either trap or sporting clays? I am not new to trap but am new to sporting clays. The gun is a new Browning Cynergy CX if that matters. I also have an IC choke for it. Thank you, Thank you very much...

After patterning, choke selection will be determined by the distance the target will be attempted.....

Under 30 yards = Improved Cylinder
30 to 40 yards = Modified
40 + yards = Fulll Choke

I shoot Modified for 16 yd. Trap
I shoot two Skeet Chokes for Skeet
Our clubs Sporting Clays course is mostly under 35 yards, so I shoot Imp. Cyl over Skeet. The one or two longer shots, I change the Skeet to Mod. As far as top vs. bottom first, I've never noticed a lot of difference and select barrels based on target presentation. I.E. if a longer target is presented first in a pair, I select the tighter choked barrel to fire first, regardless of whether it's top or bottom.

For reference, I average 20-23 in both Trap and Skeet, low 70s/100 in Sporting.

BTW - Browning Special Sporting Clays with 30" barrels.

For Trap doubles I go with IC for my first shot (bottom barrel) and IM for 2nd shot (top barrel).
I hold just above the house about where the line of the ~straight away target is. Post 3 I hold off the right side, I am right handed. I take the first target as fast as I can.
Trap singles and handicap I use Full choke for both. I started off with IM of singles and short yardage handicaps. Once I hit the 24 yard line I used Full for handicap. I also started to just leave the Full choke in for singles. I found that it helped fine tune my pointing/swing/mental game. Chippy brakes means I need to focus harder. Smoke balls = in the zone, keep it up.

For Sporting Clays I change based on about where I plan to shoot the targets. Shooting the bottom barrel first gives a straigher recoil pulse into the shoulder. Upper barrel has more upward vector. Experiment and see if it matters to you. With report pairs I usually do not bother to change the chokes around and use the barrel selector, if the chokes are what I want. True pairs I shoot the bottom barrel first. Here too if there is a lot of time between shots I sometimes do not shoot the bottom barrel first.

PS If the chokes are flush mount I would get extended chokes. Skeet, IC, Lt Mod, Mod, IM and 2 Full since you shoot Sporting Clays.

If your Cynergy only came with F. M. & IC, I'd stay with F/M for now, and shoot bottom barrel on singles under 23 yard line.

On SC field, it really depend on target presentation, you'll rarely need F on most fields.

Unless you are an A or AA sporting shooter, you will not need full on most sporting courses. I have shot many sporting courses in Canada, the US and the UK. There are not many sporting courses that require more than a LM or Mod and on most club courses an IC in both barrels works well. If you are getting into big competitions and national championships then you may require IM and Full on some stations.

It is always good to check your chokes with a bore gauge so you know the exact constriction.

1. A choke tube is a tool to give you a optimal pattern density at a given distance.

2. The average trapshooter breaks a 16 yard target 20 yard out of the house lets say consistently a 35 yard shot.

3.So if you are shooting handicap from the twenty yard line you are making a minimum of a 40 yard shot unless you are taking the target very fast.

4.For sporting clays try to have a selection of 2 each of skeet--lite mod.--mod. and imp. mod.

You need to pattern board your gun and try different chokes. Personally, I shot trap bottom full for singles and caps. Top barrel is mod or IM for first shot trap doubles. Lazy to swap chokes. In SC it's what's setup on your course. IC for close and IM more distant.
Enjoy learning your gun.

Thanks for all the input fellas! This is gonna be fun learning how to shoot this gun. I am going to shoot a couple rounds of trap with it on Saturday. I think I will start out with the mod in the bottom barrel and shoot that for the first round. For the second round, I will shoot the full choke out of the top barrel. So, should I always use the top barrel when I shoot trap singles or the bottom one?

As I suggested above. Try it both ways and see if you notice more recoil from the top barrel.
If no difference try shooting Mod in the lower barrel for singles practice and Full in the top barrel for another round of singles practice. This is how the gun should be set up for doubles. Then when shooting registered or if any money to be won, what ever you shoot best.

My gun, a Browning with Invector Plus Chokes
Trap: Bottom Barrel-IM for 16 Yard Singles - Top Barrel-Full for Handicap and games - Doubles IC at One ounce any speed /Full at 1 1/8 ounce 1200FPS
5 Stand /Sporting: Bottom Barrel IC or LM - Top Barrel Modified - 7/8 Bunker Loads
IC for 25 yards or less targets / LM for 25+ yards targets
My lack of ability misses more targets than my choice of choke.

If you are near Omaha, Guns Unlimited has a sweet deal on a set of Briley made FN branded choke tubes.

Enjoy the new gun
