O'fallon, IL and Fairview Heights are both less than 50 miles and have plenty of nice clean Hotels with plenty of restaurants near by. There are also some nice Hotels in some of the small Towns surrounding Sparta although at this point I'm sure they are booked.
Made a reservation there a couple of Grands ago. Cancelled over a month before the Grand. Charge showed up on my credit card so I disputed it, I had the cancellation number after all. They responded to the credit card company that I had two reservations but had only cancelled one and they could only submit one online reservation form (because that's all there ever was). They had computer generated verification for one reservation and I had computer generated verification of one cancellation. They sent a hand written note that I had two reservations and the credit card company accepted that.
I mad a vow then that I would never stay at that motel and never use that credit card company again.
I heard from other shooters that it was not a good place to stay even if they get your billing right.
Now back to your question B12.....There are many great places within 50 miles. O'Fallon and Fairview Heights have any kind of accomodations you might want. I have stayed at Comfort Suites and Sheraton Four Points in Fairview Heights and Homewood Suites and Sleep Inn in O'Fallon. I would reccomend any of those based on my experience. Prices are reasonable compared to Vandalia. If you just go to a sight like Expedia and type in O'Fallon, IL, you'll get the full list with phone numbers. No matter what type of restaurant you are looking for, you'll find that there also. I find the drive a nice way to wind down.
That experience with the Super8 sucks. I think I'd be a tad bit pissed myself. I have stayed at that Four Seasons in Fairview Heights. I believe they call it The Fountains. Nice place. I personally would choose the O'Fallon/Fairview area over the smaller towns anyway. There is just a lot more to do in that area.
For those of you that do not know, O'Fallon IL and Fairview Heights, IL basically butt up against each other. They are both located off of I-64. Very busy area with a mall, plenty of Hotels, several Movie Theaters, all the major Box Stores and plenty of places to eat. It's a leisure 45 minute drive to the WSRC shooting complex on well kept roads.
I travel across Ill. 13 & 15 during The Grand. Unfortunately, I don't pay attention to the towns. I have noticed several towns before you get to the St. Louis bypass that have motel vacancies. They are about 30-40 minutes from Sparta. I believe Freetown is one and they have an excellent steak house, Valentines. You could get an Illinois map and check the cities on routes 13 & 15. You DO NOT want East St. Louis!
It's too bad that the Chamber's of Commerce of the better cities don't advertise for their motel members on this site. I think it would be helpful to shooters and visitors and at least provide a starting place to begin looking for what's best/closest to you.
we have rooms at Red Bud Il. At the Red Bud country Inn They still had some rooms left they are 20 minutes away I only saw their internet pictures but the place place looks very nice. You can look them up they have a website.
"Hotels at Vandalia,OH are open during the Grand" 30 + years and I never had to drive over 2-3 miles. 20 - 30 Restaurants within 4 miles. You would have loved it. You had to live it to understand!
