Squibb,

I recommend you call Hodgdon directly and ask them.

Better to get advice you can trust than getting advice from "who knows whom" on an internet forum.

HS-5 same powder as W 540 produced by Winchester. It isn't a trap load powder but more for 1 1/4 oz. hunting loads. I have loads for it, and if you will PM me with what you are interested in loading I will look it up. BRGII

Not sure about HS-5.
I am positive that HS-6 is W540 and HS-7 is W571.

540/HS-6 is a great 12ga. pheasant load with 1 1/4oz of shot at 1330fps.
571/HS-7 is a little slower and I use it/them for 1 3/8 or 1 1/2 oz. 2 3/4" 12 ga. loads for pheasants or turkeys.

Good luck with the HS-5. Please let us know what Hodgdon says.

Happy New Year to all!!!

When WW discontinued 540 I called Hodgdon to ask what would be a good powder to substitute for my one-ounce 20 ga. hunting loads as I used 540 and was very happy with the load. I was told that HS-6 and 540 was identical and that Hodgdon was not discontinuing HS-6.

Rev, as far as your original question about HS-5, do what was suggested and what I did, call Hodgdon. You'll sleep better knowing the facts.

From Hodgdon's Web site

HS-6™ HS-6 is a fine spherical propellant that has wide application in pistol and shotshell. In pistol, 9mm, 38 Super, 40 S&W and 10mm Auto are some of the cartridges where HS-6 provides top performance. In shotshell HS-6 yields excellent heavy field loadings in 10 ga., 12 ga., 20 ga., and even the efficient and effective 28 ga. HS-6 is truly an outstanding spherical propellant. HS-6 is identical to Winchester's discontinued 540. Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers.
