Hodgdon High Gun?

Is this a new powder from Hodgdon? I was just looking at the Hodgdon site and saw it there, not in stock though. I just don't recall seeing it before. The labels shows loads for straight and tapered hulls in 1 or 1 1/8 oz. I don't see it listed on their reloading site, just the products site.

It appears to me upon first fast glimpse (and subject to correction) that "Perfect Pattern" is the faster of the two new Hodgdon shotshell powder offerings, and "High Gun" is more along the lines of a Red Dot.

But in a world already over saturated with fast burning 12 Gauge oriented powders, why not simply produce some of the established favorites, rather than introducing new offerings?
Just got an email from Powder valley. Both High Gun and Perfect pattern are now available in 1lb and 8lb. The 8lb is around $210. Isn't that quite a bit less than most other 8-pounders? I have a bunch of other powder to burn through but I'll be interested to hear how these work out. I am particularly interested in the particle size. Big like Clays or small like WST and RS Comp?

Yes, that's a big drop in price. I wonder if Hodgdon reached out overseas to someone like Explosia (in Czechoslovakia) to manufacture these powders?

I saw the price and I was like well that is interesting. The bigger problem is the only load data for cheddite primers is with cheddite hulls. I checked the Hodgdon site and those powders don't show up in the data section. As appealing as the price is when there is no data then the powder is no good to me. With Alliant doing a 30% price hike this is a welcome sign from Hodgon that you can get 8 lbs for a little over $210 from an online source before shipping and hazmat.

price: WST is like $296 on PV and some of the others are like in the $230's. So definitely lower cost.

Data: So far just what's on their labels. No doubt, they are just too new for Hodgdon to have put morr data on their reloading site. I am sure it will show up at some point.

Established powders: Since Hodgdon is a distributor and doesn't actually make powder, they can't sell what they can't buy from actual factories. Clays is a prime example of this. So they found some other factory that can supply them and they made new names for the new products.

I would still like to know the particle size and the VMD.

I know it will take a while for Ched primer data with STS / AA / Federal hulls. At least they listed Ched Hulls with ched primers and standard wads on the label.

Yeah why make a spin off of Titegroup. Can’t wait to see the price of this one tho.
Sometimes I cannot figure out the marketing. Hodgdon made a great version of the 4895 rifle powder. Then they brought out Varget, It looked the same, smelled the same, used the same load weights (+/- 1/10th) in their load data. I chronographed all my usual match loads, the velocity was the same. I shot dozens of kegs of Varget when I was competing. One time when Varget was out of stock, I bought a 4 keg box of H4895. Didn't change any charge weights and even my 600 yard zero was right on spec. I think it was just the same powder with different labels for a different marketing campaign. WW231 and Hodgdon HP-38 seem to be the same also.

If the new stuff is relabeled TiteGroup, it should be a great powder.

Well I ordered 8lbs to give it a try. $267 shipped to the house. Not a horrible price by today's standards

My best guess is that it's not marketing but sourcing. The brand names are probably tied to a particular factory. If one factory cuts them off but another factory can make the same thing, Hodgdon probably has to call it something else.

It all starts to make sense once you realize that Hodgdon is just a reseller.

Anyone got a shipping or hazmat code for Powder Valley ?
I just placed an order for perfect pattern. Hoping there is eventally a recipe for 7/8 oz. I'm sure there will be. So far no reloading data on the Hodgdon website for the new powders.
I’m surprised that Hodgdon would release a new powder with so little data, where did they even find the Winchester primers?!
Pity they dropped IMR Green
Yeah, I really liked that stuff.

The MSDS sheets for both of them show St. Marks in Florida.

did you look at it?

This label looks like the max recipe using legacy components. I don't want a 1255 fps recipe. Am I supposed to guess how much less powder I should use for 1200 fps or 1145 fps? The Hodgdon website lists NOTHING. And no pressure data. I need more data before I invest in a new product, and definitely more primer/hull combinations.

Show me the recipes!!!!!!!

The data for both powders are enough to give me a sense of how they perform such that i could come up with some loads with components i have that I could send in for testing and have a reasonable chance the data would come back within the pressure range.
