Gun Case for bringing two O/U on air travel?

Hello Trapshooters,

I am thinking about bringing two O/U on air travel. I will only bring one barrel for each gun and I hope I can fit everything into 1 checked bag.

I already have a Pelican 1720. It is very good for holding 1 gun case inside but I won't be able to fit 2 gun cases inside.

Should I have the form in Pelican cut and have both guns directly in the Pelican or I should buy a 2-gun case and have the 2-gun case inside the Pelican?

Does anyone have experience putting 2 gun cases inside the Pelican? is there enough space?

I have a pro sport K80 with 32 inches barrel and a low rib Browning with 30 inches barrel.

Thanks!

Depends on the airline. American appears to not penalize firearms up to 126 linear inches, while United doesn't give firearms an exception from 62" limit.

The 1720 is only 4.8" over, so you've probably just gotten lucky, just be ready to eat the charge.
That is good to know. I have not flown United for quite a while due to my region not having many United flights... It is good to know they are strict in size.
I fly American and Delta with guns and never have an issue yet.
I just checked Delta's website, and it says firearms are considered sports equipment as well and have the 115 inches restriction instead.

I guess I got lucky I only flew Delta and American with firearms

I have a Negrini two gun case which is airline approved, with 3 combination locks. The case weight is 10.4 pounds made of composite material.

I carried a Beretta DT 10 unsingle with a 34 inch barrel with extended tube, and Beretta 692 XT trap O/U with 32 inch barrels.

It worked well for me to take the guns into hotels for safe keeping when traveling, but don't use it any more as I bought a combo.

I’d take the foam out, and you can put the guns in padded gunslips (4), and nest them inside. Then you have slips while at the club.
Tuffpak makes great products as does Negrini. I currently travel with a single stock plus 2 barrels. I currently use an SKB and have removed the two middle pieces if foam. I place the entire negrini case inside the skb and call it a day. Eventually i will be doing the same as you and plan to cut the foam to fit them both. @nicolasberry has a great representation and picture of his case on instagram which shows two guns in a case for reference.

This section is for sporting equipment:

You have to be REAL careful with the wording. The way I read it, they will ACCEPT bags up to 115 inches, but I can't see anything that says that items b/w 63 and 115 inches are EXEMPT from oversize fees.

Even American's wording can be read both ways. Southwest SPECIFICALLY does not exempt ANYTHING from the 62 inch limit.

Personally if I were flying, and had a case over 62 inches, I'd make sure to send an email to the company I was flying with to the effect of "I am traveling with a gun who's case measures X linear inches, am I subject to oversize baggage fees?", and make sure to print that out and put it inside the case.
I have a Pelican case - #1700

It easily carries two O/U shotguns broken down.
I did replace the factory foam with 'egg crate' foam - which allows the case to fit virtually any combination of shotguns and barrels. I've even had three SxS's in the case...

Could you share a photo of your form layout? That would be super helpful!

Also, where did you get your higher-density foam?
Hi, Sorry it took so long to send you pictures, which I am attaching to this reply. I made the foam in two levels, with 3/8 inch HD foam as the base. The stocks and forends are on the top level and the barrels in the lower section. This seems to work well for me on many flights with no damage.
I am not sure where you will be able to get the foam as the place I got mine is in Ontario Canada.
I hope this is a help.

Just because you can do something doesn’t always mean you should…
Putting both guns in one case increases your chances of losing both guns at the same time.
Weight will be an issue. That increases your chances that a tired baggage handler will not be careful.

Traveling with airtags in the case really cuts down on that worry.
