Gun Case for bringing two O/U on air travel?

Hello Trapshooters,

I am thinking about bringing two O/U on air travel. I will only bring one barrel for each gun and I hope I can fit everything into 1 checked bag.

I already have a Pelican 1720. It is very good for holding 1 gun case inside but I won't be able to fit 2 gun cases inside.

Should I have the form in Pelican cut and have both guns directly in the Pelican or I should buy a 2-gun case and have the 2-gun case inside the Pelican?

Does anyone have experience putting 2 gun cases inside the Pelican? is there enough space?

I have a pro sport K80 with 32 inches barrel and a low rib Browning with 30 inches barrel.

Thanks!

You might be able to buy two Boyt single gun soft cases, and then place both gun cases into your Pelican case. Pull out all the foam out of the Pelican case, and back some clothing around key spots on the soft cases. The Boyt soft cases have padding in key spots too. You may run into extra charges for weight as well. But I expect it would be cheaper than paying full price for two legal weight Pelican cases??? Then, once your at your shooting club, you have two soft cases to carry around both of your shotguns. Leave the Pelican in your Hotel room. Good Luck to Ya. break em all jeff

Your 1720 is oversized. The 1700 is the largest case you can travel with and not risk getting hit for an oversize baggage fee on one or both sides of your flight.

Oop's, I totally missed that!!!

I also forgot to mention. That you'll need a Boyt "Break-Down" soft case to place your shotguns in as well. This way you should be able to fit both break-down cases in a Pelican 1700 case without 2 layers of foam??? Though, its possible you may have to take out all 3 layers of foam??? break em all jeff
You can get a DT10 Combo and an MX8 in the same case, if you arrange the placement correctly. The Pelican 1700 should come in at around 49 llb's with the two guns. I added some better higher density foam to ensure there is less chance of damage.
Good Luck.

Yes, 1720 is technically an oversized bag. Most airline policies say that you are allowed to carry special sporting equipment in an oversized bag at no additional charge.
But I might just get lucky that all the agents I faced did not care about that extra few inches oversize.

It is typically 100 bucks or more this day for an oversized/overweight bag. I hope I don't get hit by that...

Thank you for the input. I am a bit nervous about having soft cases instead of forms... handlers get very brutal sometimes...

Could you share a photo of your form layout? That would be super helpful!

Also, where did you get your higher-density foam?

Yes, I love my Americase too. But airlines charge 100+ dollars for overweight bags. I wish they could have a higher weight limit

The Boyt soft cases are inside the Pelican hard case. You just don't want the guns inside the soft cases to bounce around, or slide around inside the Pelican case. You can pack sweaters, or jackets for your trip inside the Pelican case if need be. To keep the cases from shifting, and rattling around. Good Luck to Ya. break em all jeff

I usually take a picture at check in, just in case airline or TSA cant find it later. TuffPak comes in a few different sizes. This is the taller of the short bags, it will fit 32” barrels. With one o/u in a Boyt soft case I can fit my hunting boots and enough hunting clothes and accessories that I can usually get by with just a carry on or a small duffel for longer trips. With two o/u’s in Boyt soft cases I need to pack a larger second bag.
As you can see, it’s been around the block a time or two and I’ve never had even a hint of damage to my guns. I got a kick out of Alaska Airlines putting a FRAGILE sticker on it…

I've flown several times with 2 OUs and another extra barrel in my pelican 1700.
It's Tetris but one receiver and two barrels in between the two bottom foam pieces and then other receiver and barrel on top of that second bottom foam (so from bottom, foam/gun/foam/gun/foam). Never any issues.
I bought a Negrini case for 2 guns, #1677LR, plus the canvas cover for it. It's a bit pricey but I've used it a few times flying from Chicago to Silver dollar without any issues. Great case and much lighter than my Americases.

Depends on the airline. American appears to not penalize firearms up to 126 linear inches, while United doesn't give firearms an exception from 62" limit.

The 1720 is only 4.8" over, so you've probably just gotten lucky, just be ready to eat the charge.

That looks like a very nice field-tested case. I am glad your gun is fine inside it. And it also doesn't look like a gun case which is a plus side from Pelicans. Thanks for the tips. I will invest in one if my pelican case cannot fit my two guns.

Where did you cut the foam? top and bottom cut and middle uncut? I am more concerned about the two guns hitting each other than something outside the case penetrated into the case.
