What I wonder is if these are "reclaimed," reclaimed from what? With the shortage of ammo where would Federal or anyone else get thousands of shells to "reclaim?"
Some company has the contract to dismantle Federal shot shells. I have purchased primers and shot from that operation. 'White bag' shot - new, not reclaimed. Paid a lot less than either of those around the Grand last year.
I bought some of the white bag shot. It was a mix of 71/2 and 8's. I didn't find any larger in the bags I had. It did have some lubaloy shot mixed in so I used it for practice shells.
Just placed my order, thank you for the heads up. .Like what has been posted before, check for powder packed into the primer.
I used a dental pick to remove flakes of powder before using them. They will all go bang.
New or reclaimed . Doesn't really matter if you can't FIND them. Sort of like a sale catalog in a communist country. Yes it's cheaper , you just can't GET any of it !
When the government wants to get rid of ammo, for various reasons, they can't sell or any third party sell finished ammo, so they contract out to companies that dismantle and sell the components.
Just on Midway site . They have shells to sell but no primers available at all. Tells me that the ammo makers are not releasing reloading components. They can obviously make more money selling shells than selling to reloaders.
I have been able to buy some repackaged shotgun primers that work for me from time to time. Have not been able to buy rifle or handgun primers for about two years from Grafs in Mexico Mo.
I suppose things vary a lot by line and ammunition type, but it's interesting to think that 100,000 1oz shot shells would have consumed 3.125 tons of lead before the issue was caught and corrected. Handling the bone pile of ammo to be reclaimed across all lines is probably a full time job for someone.
That should make you feel better the next time you have a hiccup while reloading and spill an ounce of shot or have to toss a shell into the 'to be reclaimed' bucket next to the bench. I feel guilty when I mess up one shell because I wasn't doing my job correctly. It could be worse
I have shot thousands of them. They not only have federal 209a also have Remington 209P. I believe that early on the shot had a slight mixture of 7 1/2 and 8's but the newer shot seems to be more consistent. I also have a handful of guys that I shoot with that are using the powder with good results.
