Hello all!! My local store has a sale on federal 209A primers, I typically use Winchester’s and have been told that federal primers are a little hotter. Is this true? I also shoot a relatively light load to conserve powder and what not. Would I be ok leaving my powder amount the same since it’s on the lighter side? Or should I turn it back .5 a grain or so?
With some loads, it is NOT advisable to substitute primers due to the PSI being increased beyond recommended parameters. However, with a load as light as that which you have given and the Federal 209A primer, your PSI will only go from 8900 to 10300, within safe parameters.
It's unlikely one will see many Alliant recipes using Fed primers in a Rem hull. 8300 psi is in the safe zone or using the Fed primer instead of something else.
The problem with the Alliant loaders guide, is that they almost never mix a hull and primer from differant manufacturers, which is really not realistic.
When the 209A first came out they came with a warning to be very careful what you put them into. I sold 100,000 of them that were marked as 209's on the 5000 cases. Discovered the error. What an easter egg hunt i went through finding the buyers and telling them of the error. Luckily most were regular customers. No law suits luckily. Refer to the loading manuals for your own protection. Gud luk.
