I think you have to do the written test after 30 days delinquent and both written and drivers test after 1 year delinquent here in Iowa.

Probably depends on who waits on you. They renewed my wife's with what would have been the correct expiration date had she showed up on time(3 months earlier). Was nothing to it. Even used her photo from the old card's computer file. Illinois. Good luck.

He will take the written test but it's nothing. I don't remember any added cost; it's just like he was starting again except for no "on the road" test.

Wait.....was he caught driving with the expired ID? NO?? Then WHY in the hell would there be a penalty......maybe you just don't feel like driving anymore?? any number of reasons....ok, maybe have to take the test over (stupid) but argue against any possible penalty.....F*$*%&#ing Govt agencies!!!

They asked my dad how he got to the license bureau and he said he drove. They sent him a ticket for driving after expiration. This was years ago but it did happen in MN.

son in law got back from D.M.V. this a.m. just had to renew. $24.00. but, if he would have got stopped for any violation, he would have gotten a ticket for driving without a current license and if over a year would have to take written and driving test over. he got lucky and hopefully learned a lesson.!!
