Saw that on the news this evening. Seeing those old Vettes in that hole almost makes you sick. How does a damn hole that big just all the sudden appear? I and a few other drivers hauled countless tons of lime ash and powdered cement to several places locally where they were building big box stores. The land was overtop of old underground mines. The company we were hauling for was hired to fill the mine tunnels in with a sludge mix that would set up over time. We would pump the ash and cement from our Pneumatic Bulk Tanks into silos. They would then pump it out into big mixers where water was added and big pumps would just pump the mixture down these large pipes into the abandoned mine tunnels. We did this for over 8 months 6 days a week. I always wondered how they knew when it was enough. Maybe they should have done this under the Vette museum.
Matt : They have been doing the same thing here in Kansas City just across the river north of downtown for over two years . On one side of 169 highway is upscale shopping and eating places . To the north of that are monster homes that start in the $800,000 - $900,000 price range . Across 169 east are $400,000 condos . When the paper first ran the story about the trucks pumping the slurry into the ground the poop really hit the fan . It seems none of the home owners or the commercial builders was ever told about the old limestone mines under their property...KS-OKIE
I'm not sure I would want my home built over an old mine especially after the crazy sink hole stuff you see on the news. My wife an I do occasionally shop at the Lowes which was one of the stores built on the site where I hauled into. I told her if she ever feels the ground move, run like hell. I'm not convinced they could have any proof their slurry mix worked.
Matt : No one knew about the old limestone mines in this area until a lady wrote a letter to the newspaper asking why there was always a semi with a pneumatic trailer parked on this one off ramp with hoses hooked up to it. That's when the fireworks really started . I believe if I lived in a million dollar house that's one little tidbit of info I would want to know before I signed on the dotted line...KS-OKIE
