It’s that time of year again — the Christmas tree tax has reared.

Congressional members are mulling a 15-cent tax on fresh Christmas trees, a small but significant line-item mention in the current farm bill weaving through the House, the Heritage Foundation reported in its blog, The Foundry.

This isn’t the first time Congress has tried to impose the fee. A couple years ago, members broached the topic and brought forth a tax measure — but they were beaten back by negative press and public outcry.

But the tax proposal is back again. This time, the fee would come courtesy of the farm bill’s establishment of a Christmas Tree Promotion Board, with a mission “to enhance the image of Christmas trees and the Christmas tree industry in the United States,” The Foundry reported.

Funding for the board would come by way of a 15 cent tax on all Christmas trees — a fee that would more than likely be passed from tree growers and sellers onto buyers.

“A 15-cent tax may not seem like much,” said Daren Bakst, an analyst with the Heritage Foundation. “However, taxes are a death by a thousand cuts. One of those cuts shouldn’t come from the Christmas tree. One way to actually hurt the image of the Christmas tree is to make it a symbol of taxation during the holiday season.”

We need a Christmas tree Promotion Board like we need "a hole in the head" Just about every large city has a Christmas Tree in it's downtown area. What we do need is to get the tax and grab congressmen under control.

I would suggest that any congressman (R or D) willing to tax Christmas trees first read the "Constitution" and second be immediately removed from office.

The last time these idiots tried to impose their 15 cent 'fee' per tree was right before Christmas. This brought about a huge uproar from growers, who would be hit with the 'fee'.

First, look at the amounts involved. If you sold 10,000 Christmas trees, that's $1500.

Second, contracts with buyers were done in the fall. It's too late for growers to pass along that $1500 to buyers, who would then pass it along to retailers, who would then pass it along to ma and pa.

A stupid idea by a stupid group. Christmas tree growers do not need an advocacy group sucking up money they can't afford. Many are already on a thin enough margin as it is. I know because my mother in law has a lot of acreage planted in Christmas trees.

But I thought Obummer was going to ban Christmas, by executive order No. 785693428, that way everyone could keep working to pay for Obamascare. Muslims don't believe in Christmas anyway. Are they considering taxing missletow? It is a leech or sucker type plant, that has to have a host to live. Washington ought to be use to that.
