I’m thinking of outfitting a safari to the dark continent. Any idea what kind of black powder it requires? No 6 Grain Black?

The 2 3/4 - 1 1/4 - 7 1/2 is the old live pigeon load. It is also known as 1 1/4 oz. of shot @ 1220 fps.

Though not a current legal ATA trap load, I remember reading that the pigeon load was sometimes allowed in the early days of trap and is a common load when shooting "games". Size 7 1/2 shot was preferred for live pigeons as a live pigeon must drop within a 40 yard circle. Size 8 shot did not always penetrate a pigeons head,

Have a look on the barrels at the British proof marks, It may be nitro proofed
There are a lot of threads on shooting modern powders in those sorts of barrels

No, but I personally know several people who have hunted in Africa. One of which was my grandfather who shot the 12th biggest black rhino of all time, which was the also the biggest since 1900. I would not recommend anything BP unless you really trust your PH with your life.

A heavy proofer. It would be fun to shoot that at clays and if the barrels are still in proof you shouldn't have any trouble shooting CIP 2 3/4" shells to 1 1/8 oz, although I would stick with 1 ounce loads.

You could safely shoot any smokeless load under 9682psi.
