My winter project will be to re-finish my hunting rifle. Its had the same oil type finish (I think oil) for about 30 years and has completely turned very dark.

What do I use to remove the current finish? I plan to re-finish with a spar varnish type product but have not completely decided.

I used this:

It is some mean stuff. Make sure you wear some thick chemical resistant gloves, eye protection and do it in a well ventilated area. It ate the finish right off my Beretta stock when I redid it.

We use Zip-Strip. About the same as grntitan has.

Same warnings, too.

Do not use any chemical remover if the stock has plastic pieces (like a grip cap for instance), it will eat them right up.
