Never seen an aftermarket one, but Numrich has a few, uncheckered ones with the Comp style forend.

Those Numrich stocks are nice ones. They have been selling them for years and must have bought a boxcar of them from Remington.
The wood has a LOT of figure in the ones that I have bought.

At the end of the day it really comes down to how much he wants to invest. An 870 can wear anything from a workhorse stock to a custom fitted beauty.

 

And a reminder that if he runs across an interesting 1100 or 1187 stock, with a 10.25" bolt it should mount up to the 870.

Yes they will fit but in the "older" ones the bolt hole runs too shallow and has to be drilled out.

I bought one of those stock sets from numrich for a project 870. I stripped the factory finish, did some fairly extensive work on the stock and refinished it. I was shocked how much figure was hiding under a terrible finish. I love the final result. Great stock in my opinion!
