I’m ready to start loading 28 gauge with a near purchase of a 28 gauge shot shotgun. What powder do I need to be ready to purchase when available?

You really need to buy some Win. AAHS 28 ga hulls. Then load them with either Longshot powder. Or Win. 572 powder. Both are available at most all reloading supply stores at this time. Now if you want to load some 1,150 fps 28 ga. shells. Buy the Win. 572 powder. Longshot powder can load 1,200 to 1,250 fps., which 572 will do as well. Not sure which powder you need to load some 1,300 fps loads??? But I am sure one is out their. Good Luck to Ya. break em all Jeff

Use Longshot and AAHS hulls as recommended.

There's loads for 1200 to 1275 fps, which should cover any needs for skeet or sporting clays. Small game hunting as well.

You can also try 572, but since it burns faster than Longshot, there's only load data for 1150-1250 fps. That difference is too small to really worry about.

There's nothing to be careful about when selecting primers. If you follow a book recipe, primer choice is irrelevant. Good luck!

I second/third the vote on W572, not only is it available it's very versatile as it can load everything except .410. Not sure of the concern about Cheddites as I've used them with no issues as have many others at my club. AAHS hulls are the best for 28g. Longshot is another great option but I have less experience with it in 28g so I won't comment other than that.
Good Luck

Yes, Hodgdon has reloading data with 572 and cheddite primers. However, I used the same powder drops for Longshot and cheddite primers. Using the Win. primer data, which is 14.6 grains. I was getting splits down the side after about 4-5 loadings. I then saw a tested load using Longshot and 1,215 fps loads using 13.9 grains of Longshot and cheddite primers. I switched one bushing down, to a 13A bushing. It dropped 13.9 grains on the money. I now can get over 8 loads on all my AAHS hulls in 28 ga. So Yes, Cheddite primers add 30-50 fps to many sub-gauge loads. Depending on the powder used. Of course pressures increase, as well as speed increases when used as well.
I do not see any reloading data for HS-6 in 20 ga. 7/8 oz. loads. Only in one oz. 20 ga. loads. Which does not work for me. I need a powder I can load both the 20 ga. and the 28 ga. with!!!!! The only data for HS-6 powder in the 28 ga. is using the nonexistent American made primers. You also need to use 18 grains of this powder, compared to my 13.9 grains of Longshot. So it will cost you more to reload as well. Anyway, No Cheddite primers listed with this powder. I have not seen any 28 ga. tested loads listed in the reloading section here on TS.com using HS-6 powder for 28 ga. as well. Of course I might have missed that test??? So feel free to look in the reloading section, if you plan to buy this powder. Otherwise you might need to send in some loads to be tested!!! That will cost you good money. That's why I stocked up on Longshot and Win. 572 powders!!! I have not even tried the 572 yet!!! When my current keg of Longshot disappears, I'll break the 572 and try it out. Till then, I really like the Longshot powder. break em all Jeff

After having some pressure and velocity testing done for it by Tom Armbrust (Ballistic Research) I've settled upon using Vihtavuori N340 for 3/4 Oz. lead shot loads in my 28 Gauge AA-HS hulls. Availability is generally good, and pricing has become fully competitive. Stack heights are excellent.

572 at 13.7-13.8 grains gave me fits with dished in crimps. Reports indicate that others either do or don't experience this nagging issue, so YMMV. Viht. N340 has a density (as VMD) that nicely splits the difference between 572 (borderline too dense IMHO) and Herco (borderline too fluffy IMHO).

Based upon my test results, which are posted here on the thread specific to such test results, and are also seen on the excellent spreadsheet which tracks these test results, here's what I recommend:

28 gauge AA-HS hull
Cheddite CX-2000 Primer
14.4 grains (+/- ~0.30 grains) Vihtavuori N340
CB5034-28 Wad (or) Federal 28S1 Wad
3/4 Oz. Lead Shot
Fold Crimp
