For many years 1 1/8 1200 then 1 1/8 1145 then 1oz 1200 now 1 1/8 1100 recoil bothers me now the 1100fps work good had a few 98s and 97s this summer but probably will stick with 1 1/8 1145 for all 3 events

Anything 1200 and under works for Me. I’ve shot a handful of those 980’s, I liked them, just don’t see them in my area. That Federal “game shok” 1-1/8, 3dr, 1200 is surprising comfortable & readily available, so it gets the nod quite often.
Shoot well

You do not need premium ammunition for 16 yd in fact you should try 1 oz loads on calm days.
Since you should be shooting targets just as soon on a windy day (no double checking leads), what does the extra 1/8 ounce do?

One ounce works just as well on a windy day. 16 yards is 16 yards on any day.

Am I misinterpreting your statement?

I use pretty much anything I can get my hands on for a decent price these day's, 1 1/8 oz @ 1145, 1 oz @ 1200 or 1250, 7 1/2 or 8's and given that I am a short knocker when it comes to handicap I used them at 23 also, which happens to be 22 now after my official " you suck " notification along with a -1 from the ATA but I'm sure they will work in the upcoming shooting season from 22 also

Just personal preference to have a little more shot out there on blustery days. Likewise to give considers to using #7 1/2 rather then #8 shot on those days. What do you think?

I load 7-1/2 shot for anything that is not a skeet target.

Too many 'dusted' targets when shooting #8 shot, and I prefer one ounce max for any type of 12 gauge shooting.

If you get a boost of confidence by shooting the extra 1/8 ounce on a windy day, definitely do that.

There's a mental aspect to clay target shooting that shouldn't be ignored.

1145 fps is plenty fast enough for any Trap targets.

From KPY Shotshell Ballistics

At 28 yards away #8 lead shot that starts out at 1250 fps is going 718 fps and each pellet has 1.21 lbs of energy at 28 yards.

At 28 yards away #7-1/2 lead shot that starts out at 1145 fps is going 700 fps and each pellet has 1.36 lbs of energy at 28 yards.

The lead #8 shot that starts out 105 fps faster is only 18 fps faster at 28 yards away.

At 40 yards away #8 lead shot that starts out at 1250 fps is going 592 fps and each pellet has .83 lbs of energy at 40 yards.

At 40 yards away #7-1/2 lead shot that starts out at 1145 fps is going 584 fps and each pellet has .95 lbs of energy at 40 yards.

The lead #8 shot that starts out 105 fps faster is only 8 fps faster at 40 yards away.
