I'm looking at the upcoming calendar of shoots in my area. I'm also counting how many flats of shells I'll need. Do you buy throughout the year, or do a large buy all at once? I did see a few deals online right now. Is there a good time to buy? Shipping/handling costs are a given.

Or is this a taboo question and you don't want to tell anybody when to buy?

If you have the cash, buy now. Usually the wholesalers try to get volume buys to make their numbers required from the manufacturers. Helps their inventory costs and turns. If you NEED ammo during the season, you are at the mercy of whoever happens to have it on hand. You've heard the saying...a bird in hand is worth two in the bush?

Prices will probably be going up Jan 1, so buy what you need now unless you want to roll the dice on rebates next year. Buying single flats will never be cheaper than buying everything at once.

There isn't a specific time of year that's better than any others to buy ammo.

It would also depend to a certain extent what kinda ammo you want. Remington STS & Fed HOA have had rebates recently on their ammo, and Winchester AA has in the past. I think it's probable that we'll see 2025 rebates for STS/HOA/AA. There were also rebates on Gun Club and Top Gun, but it's been a REAL long time on those, and I would be less confident about those coming back again in the near future. Pretty much no other target shotshell has had rebates, so there's no sense holding out hope for one if you buy cheapie shells or anything that's not Win/Rem/Fed.

It's all but certain that the price of ammo will come down when Israel/Ukraine are over, assuming nothing else pops off, but I'm not sure I'd gamble on that happening before I needed the ammo.

So long story short, buy your 2025 ammo now, and be ready to buy 2026 and beyond if the prices drop substantially in 2025.

Due to my financial situation I buy as I go and due to space I don't have the space to buy a ton of flats at once. I'm likely going to cut back significantly on registered shoots at least in 2025. Another question to ask is do you have the space to store flats?

My Walmart has ammo really close to $10 a box after sales tax. My criteria is any vendor that can keep the sale under the $10 gets my order. I've been stocking up on Bornaghi shells from Able Ammo as they have been running a free shipping deal for a while (to Kathleen's Ire)!
