A few inches of radius full vs mod. "We miss by feet and yards", rarely by inches. (Kaye Ohye).

  • Those of you who think using a modified choke for 16-yard ATA Trap Singles because your pointing skills are “still developing” and you think it will get you a target here or there that you wouldn’t have gotten with a full choke, are also wrong. The average size of the pattern is almost the same size between full and modified.

More math:

Tim took 30 shots at the paper, 35 yards away.
He walked 70 yards round-trip for each shot.

70 yards x 30 times = 2100 yards

2100 yards = 6300 feet = 1.19318181818 miles

Considering Tim was possibly not walking the straight and narrow,
let's say 1.2 miles.

Thank you, Tim, for the mental and physical efforts you expended to further educate us!

I noticed that for tests you used factory marked chokes, my Perazzi chokes do not match conventional choke charts. I measure then pattern and keep track of constriction and subsequent results ignoring factory markings.
Well done tests for the "Inquiring Minds"!

Dang. Now all we have to argue about all winter long is 7-1/2’s or 8’s.
Seriously, excellent work Tim. The results are a surprise. Makes me feel better about the .042 fixed choke I shoot at singles.

Excellent work, Tim! We appreciate your dedication and enthusiasm for the sport. Thank goodness for the results...I picked up a nice TM1 with a 32" fixed full choke this past weekend at the Ohio State Shoot! Decided to shoot it for the 200 singles event on Saturday. Took the first 100 to get a feel for her. Broke a 97 on the second hundred and hung plenty of smoke. Definitely hit them hard!

It does make me wonder how premium shells would have compared, on that day and in those conditions.
I actually did a pattern test a while back that shows what happens when you use hard shot versus soft shot. The pellets in these Gun Club Shells are pretty soft. See the link below.

In the case of the full vs. modified vs. improved cylinder, all three of the pattern tests would have graded out 5%-10% denser patterns, and the 75% diameters would also have "shrunk" an inch or two. Or three...

The full choke PE's might have been close to 90% and the Modified PE's might have been near 80%.

Note, the testing in the link below was done at 40 yards:

So with this I assume with a high antimony in your shot. You will experience a slightly more dense pattern or will it be similar in regards to pellet percentage and what not?
Exactly. In each case, the PE's would have been higher and the 75% diameters would have shrunk an inch or two, maybe more.

Just guessing, but I would expect that the full choke PE's might have been close to 90% and the Modified PE's might have been near 80%.

Here's a test I did a while back comparing STS Ammo, which has hard shot, to Gun Club ammo, which perennially has some of the softest shot available in factory cartridges.

Note, the test below was done at 40 yards.
