Anybody using Spartan shot and how does it compare to Heper shot ?
If it comes to fruition I’ll be curious to see if they price it as a “premium” shot or sell it for the same as their current offering. If you can get the Heper with reasonable shipping it sure seems to be the best value in shot today.Mayco states that their Lawrence Magnum and West Coast shot contain 4% Antimony. And a Pycnometer measured density of 10.82 g/CC agrees with this (or actually with closer to 4.2%).
Mayco is apparently currently test run trialing 'Mayco-6' with which to compete with Heper. I believe @timb99 is among those testing it out.
CAC is showing Spartan shot "in stock."I like it , very shiny, consistent sizing but I don’t know about the hardness. I would purchase again. Does anyone know who distributes spartan shot in the north east? CAC doesn’t carry it anymore. Thanks
It was ~Sept. 7 of last year.I can't remember when I tested the Spartan shot, but like all things, the hardness varies from batch to batch. If someone wants to send me an ounce or so of recently purchased Spartan 7-1/2's I'll be happy to smash a few.
PM me if interested.
Thank you, I’ll contact them tomorrow. Thanks? MikeCAC is showing Spartan shot "in stock."

I have to assume you never had the early Heper shot with the pitiful thin plastic liner inside that would break up and pour out sporadically?Having said that, I have preferences of shot manufacturers based on their bags. Lawrence/West Coast are tops (great thick bags with strong stitching). Heper in second (nice fabric bag, pour spout is a little gimmicky in my opinion, okay stitching). Eagle is third (heavy plastic liner stitched in to the light fabric bag). Spartan is last as it is a tarp material cover that frays but does that a plastic bag stitched into it as well. If the cover doesn’t start fraying, it is a large square shape and stacks well.
LOL. Thankfully I didn’t. I heard about those though.I have to assume you never had the early Heper shot with the pitiful thin plastic liner inside that would break up and pour out sporadically?
Ranking the quality of the shot in the bag by the quality of the bag the shot is in results in a reverse order of the shot quality, according to timb99's testing. STS shot is the best shot that has been available in recent times. Heper is the best quality currently available, according to the same testing. If I couldn't get Heper, I'd go with the Spartan before I would go with the other available shot brands.I’ll be honest, I don’t pull out calipers every time I open a bag of shot. I just buy whatever I need size wise and load it. I’ll weigh out the first few loads to make sure the weight is what I’m expecting, but that’s it. The only shot I’ve reloaded that I saw noticeable difference in was Heper. More uniformity in roundness and size.

I bought a bag of STS shot this week that had that plastic tarp consistency. Seems a little tighter of a cover, so I have some hope for it.
