Gas operated auto loaders bleed of a certain amount of pressure too. Doesn’t seem to affect performance much. I do have a couple of ported guns, other than the barrels being slightly more of a pain to clean, I don’t see much difference. Certainly no performance gain.

We don’t have porting down here. Because of the Coriolis effect, we have starboarding.
Since you are south of Kentucky (south of the equator) does your trap range face north or south and how much does your lead change regarding Coriolis effect? Does shot size vary your lead?

Here's a question: does a ported barrel affect the distance that shot travels? Since the ports allow some of the gas, and energy, to be displaced from going out the end of the barrel, I know it dampens muzzle jump; not so much recoil. But does this also reduce the energy behind the shot itself, thereby reducing the distance the shot flies? (Since I don't have a long handicap, I haven't noticed any change in the appearance of targets breaking when using the barrel, with 7 & 1/2, 2 & 3/4, 1200 fps, 3 dr. equivalent AA's.) Thanks for any info, or direction to any former posts and discussion. Just curious.

Pressure-distance curve for modern fast shotgun powders from the Alliant site for 1 1/8 oz. 1200 fps (trap) loads. At 15" the pressures are less than 1000 psi.

At 32" the pressure is still about 460psi, which is still pushing the wad/shot column forward. How much the velocity with a 34" barrel length is reduced by porting is above me.

The effect of reduced muzzle jump by porting has been videoed and posted on here before. It was eye opening, but I'd have to search more to find it.
My Unsingle barrel is not ported, the gun fit is fine.

Many moons ago Cutts Compensators were very popular on Model 12's, 31's etc, it was considered and enhancement that helped sell the guns. Shooters preferences changed and add on chokes became dinosaurs.
In the 80's porting was the hot idea, you could get them while you waited at major shoots. Lots of quality guns, (Perazzi, Beretta's etc) were ported. These guns are still in service, still quality but with the porting. I have a Tom Seitz TM1 that is ported in his style, I don't worry over the ports I just shoot it and enjoy what I feel is superior barrel smithing! I would buy an MX8 with porting over many other later brands without ports!

Not sure if ports help my shooting but they sure are a PITA to clean!
:D
