It is only a waste of ammo/time if you did not enjoy it. If you had fun, then it was worth it...if not, maybe go back to trap. The game is entirely different and intended to be a challenge...and fun!!!

Any time you're practicing putting a payload of shot were it might intercept a target you are getting valuable practice.

Those long in coming targets that fall in front of you? I started calling that one before I even had the shells for that one in hand let alone in the gun. That helped me not mount my gun to soon.

I’m an average trap shooter. A bad day for me is when I shoot under 22 out of 25. 22/23 is about right for me. My two oldest sons wanted me to try 5 stand. What a disaster for me. I struggled to get 12. Am I ruined because of trap shooting? I obviously don’t have any idea on how to lead the birds from so many different directions. Am I the only one doing so badly in this transition. I almost feel it is a waste of ammunition!!
I would say it depends what your goals are. If you only ever want to shoot trap then maybe not focus on it. But If you want to be a well rounded clay shooter or even just to beat your sons, then it’s not a waste of ammo. Any trigger time will make you better. I love sporting clays but will shoot 5 stand, skeet and trap.

My tiny club has 5-stand and there are presentations I enjoy and feel like I understand, and others that I need to practice repeatedly to determine the lead (long crossers, mostly). In bound targets I think are some of the easiest- they are getting slower and larger the longer you wait. I definitely enjoy trap more, but will occasionally shoot the 5-stand layout for the diversity as practice, even though it does sometimes feel like throwing ammo away.

I shot 5 stand once and my partner and I won a gun .
I think we missed two targets.
We gave the gun to my 5 year old son.
I enjoyed it but have never done it since.
All my friends were into trap so that keeps me entertained.
Its funny hearing folks say trap is easy.
I'd wager they couldn't hit 75 of 100 on the 27 yd line.

My club only has trap, skeet and 5 stand. skeet is by far the most popular, followed by 5 stand then trap. Trap and skeet are a game of 25’s. when you go over to 5 stand and shoot a 15 people tend to get mad and never come back.

If you are shooting 5-stand at a range like ours and you would like to learn how to hit the shots as some of the better 5-stand shooters what the leads they are seeing are. I run our 5-stand and it is very different game than Trap. But don't be intimidated by the lower score. Everyone starts there and it takes practice to learn how to shoot incoming, crossing, overhead, teals, and rabbits. If you aren't accustom to sustained leads you may try a swing through technique to help your game. Watch videos on shooting certain targets and watch others that are good at it. If it is something you can do with your sons.... Go do it.. Have a great time.

You can get better but many shots are not like trap targets, try getting your head of the stock some, and seen many trap shooter make the adjustment and do well in 5 stand

The first time I shot 5-stand I swear I was dizzy afterward, it can be pretty confusing at first. Our 5-stand usually opens up in the spring and is pretty casual. We welcome newcomers to our 5-stand, and any one of the regulars is more than happy to help folks unfamiliar with the game. A lot of the trap shooters simply refuse to even try it and I think they’re missing out on a lot of fun.
Trap shooters don't want to be seen in their little pink TUTUS

We have trap and 5 stand at our club, I shoot both.

Totally different games.
To me trap is about consistency and perfection.
5 stand is about different presentations and harder targets, there should be very few 25s.

A lot of trap shooters at the club stay away from 5 stand due to them not posting good scores. Just think how much practice some of us put into trap targets, and imagine how much practice one would need to learn the variety of 5 stand targets and leads.

At our 5 stand you can ask the puller for any targets, in theory you could practice the same target on all posts.

We set our wobble PAT trap to the extreme limits, horizontally and vertically, and crank it up as fast as it will throw, then shoot from the 20 yard line. Close as we can get to bunker. You get two shots, and we rotate like traditional trap after 5 shots, so people don’t get too confused. Great fun.
