I'm thinking about trying either the Briley Helix chokes or the Briley Plasma chokes for 16 yard singles trap. Just wondering if anyone has used either of these choke types and what your opinions are, good or bad? Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

For me I would not buy either choke!!! First I don't like the Helix choke. I see zero reason to buy a choke with spiraled grooving. This is only going to make the choke weaker at the end, and make a mess with plastic fouling on a daily basis.
Next you thinking about the Plasma choke. Which is made out of Aluminum. I would much rather have the stronger Titanium made chokes. If you want a lighter choke at the end of your barrel??? If you want a lighter choke, I would point you toward the Extreme line of chokes. I really like the look of their Titanium chokes. Or if you want the weight of a stainless steel choke? Then stick with the Spectrum line of Briley chokes if you like they way they look. All Briley's chokes will give you excellent patterns. So your not going to gain any targets, buying one choke over another. In essence, Your really buying a fishing lure!!! The lure is made to attract the shooter. Not the target. LOL I fished for years and lures are made the same way. They are designed to attract fisherman. Not so much for fish. You want to catch more fish. Use live smaller fish!!!! Stick to plain regular extended steel or titanium chokes.
I take it you're not a fan of the oft touted Muller chokes?

Not At All!!! I would not use Muller chokes in any of my shotguns, if you gave them to me for free!!!
I have seen way too many barrels damaged using these chokes. At least Briley strengthens the Aluminum they use to make their Plasma chokes. I say why run the risk of a accident waiting to happen. Use a Titanium choke, or a normal Stainless steel choke. Why take chances that are not needed??? break em all Jeff

Neil Winston tested a Briley Helix choke against a standard Briley choke with the same constriction, and they patterned the same.
Unless the choke tubes are manufactured improperly, chokes is chokes is chokes. If you have two (or more) chokes with the same exit diameter, they're probably going to pattern nearly identically.

Tested quite a few for my beretta HP barrels. Sent most back but kept the comp n choke. Like their non ported the best. Most are good / better geometry etc than factory.
However my cg factory chokes were awesome right out of the box. no way they could be improved upon and i didnt waste the time or expense.

Fabarm chokes and CG chokes are good chokes. I have used Muller, Briley stainless, Briley titanium, comp-n-chokes and didn't find enough difference in any of them to justify switching from the OEM chokes. I do think the Briley titanium look good however. Wasted several $ trying to find the magic choke. Browning DS chokes were a different story a few years ago when I had a 725, maybe they are ok now.
During discussion with multiple manufacturers as well as overall study of the choke tube after market, they all try different scenarios of geometry, lengths of parallel, overall lengths, porting etc. A whole lot of hype in there for sure!!. They are mostly manufactured to better tolerances and mostly better than factory. I tested lots and sent lots back that proved nothing special. My study led me to believe that anything IC or more open shot about the same pattern unless defective or something so I was not interested in further study or purchase of open chokes. The longer chokes were better but to an extent and it depended on size of shot. The small shot patterns pretty good through most so differences are smaller. Things really change with the larger shot and all the different bore diameters.
Another thing I saw pretty consistent was that everyone is playing the same game as golf club manufacturers trying to out perform each other in that what was once XXX is now much tighter but labelled the same XXX. Almost all the after market mod chokes are more like IM or LF to add some shock and awe to how great it is. I've done a lot of patterning in my spare time. Lots to see there. At the end of the day, in clay target sports, your shooting a target at a somewhat defined distance with your various load and want to be confident things are about the best possible at that distance. Everything changes hunting as your now at a full distance range with applicable pros / cons.
I will say todays barrels with the lengthened forcing cones, overboring and whatever seem to pattern fantastic as compared to many of the mass produced barrels of the past. I also believe the aftermarket chokes are better than standard mass manufactures like Rem , Browning, Benelli, Beretta---- but, as mentioned above, in some scenarios not enough to matter and in others a very big difference.

I have done a lot of practical pattern work on all my shotguns in every gauge. The above statement is basically true. Most chokes at the same exit diameter will pattern similarly. I want to see a real pattern with the ammo I am using at the expected ranges I am shooting. People dont comprehend how much your pattern opens up/ goes away in 5 yards. All that being said, Briley Spectrum chokes are a quality product and worth a look. Just my 2 cents. Z
