Titegroup " aka High Gun " is for heavier stuff.
I see 66 loads on Hodgdon's website with High Gun powder for both one oz. loads and for 1 1/8 oz. loads. As you mentioned this powder is great for 1 1/8 oz. loads as well. To me this makes this powder more versatile IMO. I saw a one oz. load that ranged from 1,180 to 1,345 fps. 1 1/8 oz. loads range from 1,090 fps to 1,255 fps. That's a pretty versatile powder to me!!! However, no loads listed for any 7/8 oz. loads. If that makes a difference, on what you want to load??? break em all jeff

While I didn't say TiteGroup ( High Gun) couldn't be used for 1 Oz. ( which it certainly can) My point was it is probably best suited for 1-1/8 oz. offerings. Perfect Pattern is pretty much limited to the lighter loads and can be use with 7/8 recipes . As you say it all depends on what you intend to load . Since I shoot mainly 1 oz. , and rarely load 1-1/8 ( except hunting loads Annies, and Protection games) , and keep some other powders on hand for that , My personal choice of target powder would be Perfect Pattern .

My favorite 12 ga. load is a one oz. @1,180 fps. For Annies and games, I can load High Gun for 1 1/8 oz. loads at 1,255 fps when needed. Which is more than enough for most games. I don't shoot in cold weather, so my needs and your needs may differ. But you can't load Perfect Pattern that fast with a 1 1/8 oz. of lead. So HG powder is perfect for me. I don't load 7/8 oz. loads for 12 ga. If I want to shoot a 7/8 oz. load. I will load up some 20 ga. loads. Now I can use the proper gauge to shoot this payload. So I know which choke to use, for the proper distances I plan to shoot that day.
How do you know what choke to use in a 12 ga. shotgun if you want to shoot 35-40 yard targets, with a 7/8 oz. payload of shot? I know what choke to use in my 20 ga., I'm just guessing what's the best choke to use, for a 7/8 load in the 12 ga.??? I might want to use one choke tighter when shooting a one oz. load. I assume (but don't know for sure) if I should tighten up my chokes two sizes for targets at this distance with a 7/8 oz. load of shot??? Mmm break em all jeff

I shoot 7/8 in 12 Ga. for skeet and practice on 16 yd. sometimes Seems to work fine for me. As far as to what choke ,International Skeet and Bunker trap uses 24 Grams ( pretty much a 7'8 oz. load just a Nat's hair difference ) The skeeters uses a Skeet choke or maybe a Skeet II in the second barrel. As for what choke for trap with that load, the Bunker Bunch uses Full almost exclusively Works for me.

Your not alone in loading 7/8 oz. load in the 12 ga. To save money, and recoil on your shoulder.
I think you missed my point though. 12 ga. chokes are designed to be used with 1 1/8 payload of shot. Now if you thin out your shot to a one oz. load. Do you need to tighten your chokes to avoid the holes your going to have in your pattern now. So with that should you tighten your chokes even farther if your shooting 7/8 oz. loads. Remember that a 20 ga. optimum size pattern is about 3 inches smaller in diameter than a 12 ga. optimum size pattern of 30 inches. The pattern size needs to be reduced to allow for less pellets in the pattern. Or you will get more holes in your patterns for targets to fly through.
Of course nobody has done any testing alone these lines for target shooters on lighter payloads!!! So if your using skeet chokes for your 21 yard skeet shots on stations 3,4, and 5. How do you know you don't have twice as many holes in your pattern, using a 7/8 oz. payload???

I know if I load 7/8 oz. of shot in my 20 ga. loads and use a skeet choke while shooting skeet. I have the perfect choke for the target distance I am shooting. This has been figured out by years of testing data.

While your light 12 ga. loads might need a IC choke in both barrels??? Or even a Light Modified choke in both barrels for stations 3,4,and 5??? IMO, I think the LM choke would be a bit too much, but the IC choke should be just right. If that is the case? Then what choke should a person use to break a 21 yard trap handicap target with 7/8 oz. of shot??? Now you see my point. As you remove shot in the payload, you need to tighten the chokes to compensate. Heck, we can't even get shooters to agree what choke to use for 16 yard Trap targets, with a 1 1/8 oz. load of shot. Using less shot, just complicates what choke to use. sigh. break em all jeff

Well for me it is a non issue since I use a Full or at the very least light full for trap anyway, I ;m not sure I agree about the 12 ga. chokes All being designed foe 1-1/8 oz. of shot. Especially European guns. I use 1 oz. loads in 12 Ga. for Doves and never found any problem with using my 1 oz. trap loads with with a .020 choke .Sometimes I hunt quail in think cover with a light weight twin tubed gun. My first shot is 7/8 oz. of #8s followed by 1 oz. of 7-1/2s IMP. cyl in the first barrel and Mod. in the second barrel. and I have had no issues with those chokes and those light loads. The pattern board didn't think so and The birds at moderate ranges didn't seem to either. Personally I think shot hardness is a bigger factor as far as patters go.

That's were we differ. I have always used a modified choke for shooting 16 yd. Trap!!! I too used a one oz. load for most of my singles shooting. But IMO, I might need to use at least a IM for 16 yd. singles, if I were use a 7/8 oz. payload of shot. Then more than likely a full choke for my handicap yardage with the same 7/8 oz. load. Its not rocket science though. We all need to use what we feel is needed, to keep our confidence up. break em all Jeff

Everybody has their opinion ( to each his own) I have known many of the greats of the game. Almost all of them used a tight choke . I'm not saying Mod. wont break 16 yd. targets . I have tried it but ,went back to IMP Mod and Full because it gave me better breaks .What ever floats your boat. Break e'm all !

I only shoot trap at 16 yds mostly
Once in a while I do 20 yd handicap
7 1/2 or 8 shot mostly and use to use 700x then red dot then promo now trying to find a goid tite group load cause can't get others anymore in my area

Welcome to the site Ron - just an FYI - you’re posting on a thread over a year old. Have you checked Hodgdon’s site for data? There is also a thread at the top of the Reloading section that lists loads that members sent in for testing.
