I've reloaded with Red Dot powder for 30+ years and now with the supply problems I can't find any. What alternative to Red Dot are you using that you're able to find available? I reload 12ga 1 1/8oz shot and like a load that's 1200-1250fps.

I have switched over from Clays to 700X. 700X may be the closest powder that is similar: low density and flake-type. I think Red Dot is pretty similar to Clays. Red Dot is a bit lower density so stack height may be slightly less. Look on Hodgdon for the load data and see if it suits your needs. I am loading about 18gr of 700X in Fio hulls with Fio primers with 1 1/8oz and getting 1220fps average as measured with my Garmin Xero. One could go even higher if desired. The range of loads supports that.

PP is a very high density powder so it will stack very differently from low density powders like Red Dot. It is also not a flake powder but rather very fine. So it is in no way similar to Red Dot. The OP didn't mention what hull type he is using. Dense powders like PP are not well suited to straight hulls, only tapered hulls.

I don't see any current data. For Red dot that exceeds 1200 fps . For 1 1/8 ounce.
If safely achieving 1,250 FPS with a 1-1/8 Oz. of lead shot payload is an essential criteria, then Green Dot may be a bit better choice than Red Dot. Green Dot is showing up as available more frequently these days, but it's become rather expensive.

Now if only Hodgdon would revive Scot/Accurate Solo 1000. Slower burn rate than Red Dot, but faster than Green Dot.

Edit: Solo 1000 doesn't have 1-1/8 Oz. data exceeding 1,225 FPS either...

Edit #2: When was the last time anyone spotted Solo 1000 for sale, and did the label say 'Western' or 'Hodgdon'? I'm wondering if Hodgdon has ever had General Dynamics in Canada produce Solo 1000 for them.

Promo & 700x--- no brainer. Switching everything over to the dense powders at Hodgdon is much cheaper but not worth the hassle working up new loads. If you decide to embark on that, then its high gun / tightgroup to optimize the load you are suggesting.

These are all very good points. Especially on the hull point. The hull will greatly matter for which powders to go for. All in all, there are definitely options out there right now.

I've used RS Comp and while it works ok, it is not a flake powder. It is one of those annoying, small-particle powders that dribbles from the charge bar and is very static prone when the wad goes into the hull. An obvious choice for 1250fps with 1 1/8 is WSH and while it has a reasonable flake size, it is high density like PP and HG. If you are depsperate enough to run it in a straight hull, you need to run a 1oz wad for 1 1/8 load. Best to leave WSH, PP, and HG to Rem and Win hulls.
