I was watching Midway USA tonight and Larry was waxing guns. I’ve never seen that before. Wood and metal. I bought some high grade gun wax when I refinished a stock, but didn’t have the nerve to use it. Now to the question, I have both oil finish stocks and epoxy finish. Should I wax them or just leave them be? I normally just wipe down the wood and oil the metal. Thoughts?

Depends on your environment. I live in a very hot and dry area; sweat a bit when shooting. A good paste wax seems to help preserve the wood. In moist areas wax will provide a limited amount of water protection. Wax works on either, unless it is linseed based wax then may stay tacky over epoxy. Good wax wilol make oil finish pop a bit and will fill very minor flaws.

Thanks for the replies. I think the Renaissance Wax is what I have. I’ll have to check. In all my years I never heard of waxing a gun. Guess I’ve been sheltered. Laughing here.

I use some Amish wax that we bought when in New York State on everything in my collection.

I don't use oil on the barrels, inside or out due to the fact the oil will migrate into the wood over time when the guns are sitting upright in the racks.

here we go again about the great renaissance wax. last fall i took a piece of cold roll steel about 15 inches long taped it in the middle and rubbed in and polished each side. one side was the renaissance wax the other was kiwi neutral shoe polish. hung it outside under the trees. looked at whenever i walked by. and guess what both sides rusted equally. some of you guys believe everything that you read on a lable. renaissance manufacturer loves you

I use Renaissance wax on every gun. One little mistake with oil and it can find its way into your stock and discolor it.

Renaissance wax is microcrystalline based wax. Another good choice is Carnauba wax (it is a bit tougher to use but has an amazing hard finish).

Well went on a Caribou hunt and was rained on 9 days and my Gun came out ok. No rust on my 1976 1100 that I hunt with even though the blueing is coming off. Nothing lasts forever though.
