I just bought a Remington 870 Trap (new) and it came with 3 choke tubes. A long handicap.041, a mid-handicap.034, and a singles.027. Are these chokes okay?
I remember someone posted a different brand to use . Any thoughts. Advice is very much appreciated.

Use the chokes that come with the gun. Spend time at the patterning board shooting various loads to see what the gun likes best, not all factory shells or reloads will give the same results on the patterning board.

If you are a mid yardage handicap shooter I would put in the Mid Handicap choke and use it for Singles.

You should try using the Singles choke for Singles to see if you shoot better scores than with the Mid Handicap choke. If you do shoot better change chokes accordingly. You also may want to get extended chokes. It makes changing chokes easier.

I found that I shot better with a tighter choke for Singles. I think that it becomes a mental thing, when I did not make a smoke ball I did not focus like I should. It showed I needed to make sure I focused harder on the next shot.

Patterning is a waste of shells for most trapshooters…
Yes and no . While I agree with that as a general statement . It depends . Just throwing shot on paper doesn't help much . I've never been a fan of patterning at 40 yards. Most trap birds are broken at about 35 yards and I pattern from there. Most shooters don't take enough shots and then compare an average. Also they don't take the time to divide the pattern into quadrants . A lot of good information on pattern work can be found in the book. "Shotgunning, the Art and the Science by Bob Brister,

Those chokes are what you need for trap. However, if they are not extended chokes, you should buy a new set. Flush chokes are good for skeet and sporting clay where you don't usually rest the point of the barrel on the shooting pad. In trap, the extended choke protect the end of the barrel from normal wear.

I think patterning your shotgun is very beneficial if you have an adjustable comb and it can give you more confidence in your gun if you know where it is shooting. So much of trap is mental so any advantage you can give yourself is a benefit.

There's alot of options and claims to better performance out there. I've tried a couple meaning 2. Never saw anything different results than what the factory chokes produced.

I'd put in the .041 and forget it. You aren't going to find anything better, because a machined steel tube is a machined steel tube. You have a proper constriction and it's already paid for.
After owning one of these barrels years ago I was going to recommend the opposite.
Unless you are shooting games from the back of the parking lot the other 2 more open tubes are enough.

I've found the long handicap tube absolutely demolishes targets from up front to all the way back. The other two don't. The mid handicap is fine for singles, but I prefer not to keep track of which tube is in the gun for which event and the mid handicap isn't going to get you a target the long handicap doesn't. I wouldn't use a .02x for anything in a singles or handicap gun.

Pattering board also helps you know where your gun shots. Our club has a monthly Chichen shoot - I run a raffle selling posted notes with a dot - Put your name and stick it on a 36" target - winner from the month before shoots one shot at 33 yards. Closest bb to the dot wins half the pot, most bb on your posted note gets a bottle of my home-made wine. Been doing this for four years. You would be surprised at how many shoots don't now where their gun shoots.
