Finally broke down and bought a 20 gauge o/u which I intend to use for upland birds and maybe a round or two of Sporting Clays. Stopped my local Bass Pro and found they had numerous pallets of different 12 gauge loads but only two boxes of 20 gauge! Are 20 gauge shells that rare compared to 12 in the U.S.?

You used to find just as many 20 ga. shells as 12 ga. shells before Covid hit, and at the same price point. Now after Covid, its harder to find 20 ga. shells now. Most all stock down here in Florida was sold out a year ago. You couldn't find a box of 20 ga. hardly at all!!! All of which has seemed to raised the price of 20 ga. shells now as well. So now, its common to find 20 ga. shells selling for more money than 12 ga. shells, at least in some stores. So a place that is selling both gauges for the same price, is going to be hit or miss. I've seen some Walmart's have 20 ga. 4 packs sitting for weeks. While other Walmart's can't keep 20 ga. in stock. Stocked Ammo Supplies are still way down from what they normally were. sigh.
If you look at Remington's website. Their STS 20 ga. shells have a suggested retail price of 3 bucks more a box than the 12 ga. STS shells now. sigh again. break em all jeff

In 2020 at Cabela's I paid $16.99/box for 20ga Herters steel waterfowl loads, in 2021 they were $19.99/box and the supply was limited but still available every couple months. 2022 they jumped to $27.99/box IF they even had them in stock. Day before yesterday I came across some Remington Clay & Field, three years ago they cost me $99/flat, now they are $140/flat. I left them there...for now. I may have to grab them soon or maybe not have any at all!!

My friend went to Walmart, Cabelas, and Murdochs on Friday looking for 20 ga shells here in the Denver metro area, and all three stores didn’t have any 20 ga shells. He found 12, 16 and 28, but no 20 or 410. Luckily I had some to sell him, so we could go shooting on Saturday.

I have not seen any 20 gauge shells at any Wal-Mart's in my area since March of 2020. They currently have 12 gauge in stock in the Federal 100 round packs and some Winchester AA but no 20, 28 or .410. I found at the local Dunhams that there were around four boxes of Remington Express in #5 shot and that was it.

Walmart has been my go to for 20 gauge. The only thing I can usually count on them having is the Federal red box 100 pack. A year or 2 ago, 20 gauge was almost never found and we struggled to find some for the 4-H season. Things started improving late 2021 and have been pretty good this year. .410 is the real rarity around my area.

So for the sub gauges your best option is to reload,

If you are going to get into reloading here is where you will make up the cost.

Good Luck,

DGH
I already reload 12 gauge but have no hulls as I haven’t shot any 20 gauge yet. Will buy some shells, (if I can find any), and save the hulls for future.
