My 2 cent opinion: when 800X first appeared I purchased a can and tried it for my 20ga. skeet loads back in the 70’s. Was surprised by the diameter and thickness of the flakes. Loaded a couple of boxes and headed out to Redlands T&S club. There was an old skeet shooter which was camping at the club in his old Condor motor home by the name of Ivan. Ivan had just purchased a new chronograph and was setup testing his 12ga. trap loads. He asked if I had any shells I would like to have tested. We proceeded in testing only 8 shells and both of us were stunned by the readings. The load was in the newest DuPont manual for the old Remington 20ga. RXP hull using power-piston wads and Remington 97* primers. The readings were 1305, 1308, 1302, 1309, 1305, 1306, 1308, and 1304!!!!! They were as fast as the factory 20ga. (Skeet loads were supposed to be 1200fps.) plus they were much more consistent than the factory ammo by far.
I was going to start loading for everything except the .410 using 800X, but found it very unreliable in my 1oz. 12ga. shells. Especially in cold weather. Sometimes a double report. Was told by the local Remington rep not to load a light shot load in the 12ga. He said at least 1 1/8oz. of shot. Soooooooo I decided to stick with my old favorite 7625 for the three big shells.
800X did work fine in the 28ga. also. I don’t recommend anyone trying to load 800X on any progressive loader. Using 600JR will give the most consistent powder drops. I think because your settling the powder in the charge bar by working the handle up and down 5 or more times for each shell.
