Sadly, due to declining health a friend of mine is no longer shooting. He has offered to sell me an 8# jug of 800X at a VERY reasonable price. I’ve not loaded 800X before. Best uses - gauge, loads, etc. Looking for factory tested recipes.

Thanks in advance.

I suppose I should mention that 800x has very large flakes. Because of this, the powder drops very poorly, and erratically in a progressive reloader. If you want to reload with 800x you should use a single stage Mec reloader. The powder packs and drops more consistently when the powder packs in the powder bushing with the 5 pulls of the handle.

800x can be used in either 20 ga. and, or 28 ga. loads if memory serves. break em all jeff

My 2 cent opinion: when 800X first appeared I purchased a can and tried it for my 20ga. skeet loads back in the 70’s. Was surprised by the diameter and thickness of the flakes. Loaded a couple of boxes and headed out to Redlands T&S club. There was an old skeet shooter which was camping at the club in his old Condor motor home by the name of Ivan. Ivan had just purchased a new chronograph and was setup testing his 12ga. trap loads. He asked if I had any shells I would like to have tested. We proceeded in testing only 8 shells and both of us were stunned by the readings. The load was in the newest DuPont manual for the old Remington 20ga. RXP hull using power-piston wads and Remington 97* primers. The readings were 1305, 1308, 1302, 1309, 1305, 1306, 1308, and 1304!!!!! They were as fast as the factory 20ga. (Skeet loads were supposed to be 1200fps.) plus they were much more consistent than the factory ammo by far.
I was going to start loading for everything except the .410 using 800X, but found it very unreliable in my 1oz. 12ga. shells. Especially in cold weather. Sometimes a double report. Was told by the local Remington rep not to load a light shot load in the 12ga. He said at least 1 1/8oz. of shot. Soooooooo I decided to stick with my old favorite 7625 for the three big shells.
800X did work fine in the 28ga. also. I don’t recommend anyone trying to load 800X on any progressive loader. Using 600JR will give the most consistent powder drops. I think because your settling the powder in the charge bar by working the handle up and down 5 or more times for each shell.

I would view the optimum use for 20ga 1oz, and 12 ga HEAVY loads. Perhaps more suited for a "hunter" than a casual target crusher.
I think it was also used in 28ga, but due to large flakes and small powder drop tube I seem to remember some guys complained of powder bridging.
I remember a friend buying a keg when it first came out, he loaded trap loads and they were louder than other loads but not by a bunch.
I guess see if some of the powder can be trade bait, and use it however you want.

What Pull & Mark says. Tried it once and found it meters very poorly . If can be used in 20 Ga. hunting loads or heavy 12 Ga. loads but if I were to use it it would be in a single stage loader. Would I use it if it were given to me ? ,probably but I wouldn't buy it. There are much better powders out there.

I've loaded a few hundred pounds of it in handicap trap loads on a 9000H. Federal Gold Medal hull, Winchester primer, factory Federal 12S3 wad and 23.5 grains of 800X. It took a 34 bushing to get that much, probably why I didn't have any issues with drops. I think you could go up to 24.5 grains but never needed to.

And before the load police scream it isn't a listed load.... it was right off the Dupont paper guide. The cream colored paper one put out in the ninties.

If Federal would have kept the ribbed hull and not gone to the smooth ones, I'd still be loading it. Soft on recoil but hit targets hard. Boomy in short barrels. Dirty as heck, you could plant potatoes in the barrel it was that bad, a couple strokes with a dry brush and all was good though.

My opinion on 20 and 28 was it sucked. Flakes were too big for the small gauges.

Go for it! I've used it very little, still have a pound or two. If drops are inconsistent, a Lee Load All might be a good option. I have my Lee set up with green dot right now. When I run out of green dot, and cant find any more, I have thought about using up the 800x I have on hand. I'd sure buy that 800x. Any powder is good to have on hand.

I have 2 12lb or 15lb empty cans l use as trash cans and have gave as many away and still have 1 unopened on the shelf along with a 8lb plastic jug l am using. My only 20ga load powder and have loaded hundreds of rounds with it for heavy field loads for pheasant hunting buddies. I also use it in several of my Games loads as well.
