12 gauge 1 0z. loads with Bullseye powder

Hi There,

I'm looking for some loads using Bullseye powder. I have several type of hulls, some Win. AA white wads and a few CCI 209 primers and some Federal 209A primers. I want to get my older progressive MEC going and do some shooting. I've seen some loads guys have recommended but I can't find them now. I'd like to load 1 oz. loads and use this powder up.

I used up about fifteen pounds of that stuff in the late 70sv/early 80s after dad passed and we shut down our ammo loading business. DuPont data. 1 oz and 1 1/16 oz loads. AA shells. Maybe why my TB receiver cracked a few years later. Heck, burn rate is only a hair off of Red Dot.

Bullseye is a FANTASTIC .45 powder, not 12ga. Loaded 10s of thousands of them over the years for myself and others for bullseye matches. 200grn LRN and 4.2grn made that 1911 Colt just sing!!!!

Bullseye is a fast pistol powder. Not a shotgun powder in any safe load. That is why it is not in the books.

OK here goes .There are loads that are plenty safe loads using Bullseye in 1 oz. target loads . They didn't list loadings over 1 oz. But there were lots in the 1 oz. loadings . They are not listed in the Alliant manual NOW but ,the older manual has them listed. You can also find them in other older manuals as well. The statement that Bullseye is not safe in any shotgun load is false . When I had a source for it I loaded several kegs of it in 1 oz. loadings. The older manuals (including the old Alliant manual) listed several 1 oz. loadings . It burns clean and performs very well with several 1 oz. loads . Most of the 1 oz. loads listed in the old Alliant manual had pressures under 10,000 . Actually most were under 9,000 and some under 8,000. ----My favorite load used the AA hull , Win. 209 primer ,Windjammer wad , 18 Grs, of Bullseye and 1 oz. of shot .The pressure was 9,500. ------- The same load using a PC wad and 17.5 grs. of Bullseye had a low pressure of 7,300. ----In the Remington Premier hull ( Remington says any load can be used the same in STS or Gun Club) The load I used was with the Fig 8 wad and 17.5 grs. and 1 oz. shot . The pressure was only 7,900 . I asked an Alliant powder Rep. why they quit listing it in the manual and he didn't give a clear reason but, said they wanted to concentrate on it as a pistol powder . At any rate if you care to do some research and find the older manuals ( as rbinversie and nducky have done ) there are a lot of loads for it.

Maybe so but, pressures were not high in the Bullseye loadings and many were very low . Also Alliant never could give me a straight answer to as why they dropped them in the 12 Ga. 1 oz. loading in the new manuals, except to say they were concentrating on it as a pistol powder . I never loaded Red Dot in the 20 Ga. I have loaded a LOT of 7/8 Green Dot loads in the 20 and they aren't in the new manual either. Matter of fact the Green Dot loads in 7/8 oz. are still my go to quail loads . I know about the alleged "tube cracking" but, the reason I never payed much attention to that is two fold, Number one, Alliant never said they agreed with that. Green Dot was a very popular universal powder and many used in the the 20 with no problems. Number two ,I never have ,nor probably ever ,will use a tubed gun. My Skeet gun ( which I rarely use) is a 4 barrel set with no tubes. The guys at Alliant never said or even hinted I should stop using published Bullseye loads in the 12 Ga, in 1 oz. loads . They only gave me that statement about promoting it as a pistol powder. If I still had a good source for Bullseye at a good price I would have no qualms about loading it in 1 oz. But to each his own. :)

In one of Bob Brister's books he used Bullseye for his 1oz. loads. In the late 70's he was kind of a pioneer in the promotion of the 1oz. load for trapshooting. He also did LOTS of experimentation with patterning and shot string length. He would have his wife tow a pattern board behind their station wagon and shoot at it.
Like Slide Action I shot quite a few 1oz. loads with Bullseye but with the Federal 12S0 wad. Later I determined that Red Dot shot better and switched to that instead.

Don't know which "book" you were using but The "book" loads In the old Alliant manual gave plenty of 1 oz. loads up to 18 grs.

Shot a lot of 20 gauge 7/8 ounce loads at quail and dove. Worked great. Got some bullseye given to me and loaded some 1 oz with it and it worked well. Used most of it loading 38 spc. and 45 acp.
