Is a pump or semi auto shotgun used exclusively for clay shooting required to have a magazine plug?

No, but all clubs limit loading more shells than targets thrown, so one in the chamber for singles, one in the chamber and one in the magazine for doubles. Some clubs will hold 3 bird Sporting Clays games, then you are allowed two in the magazine. But, other than exhibition shooting, no more than three shells would ever be necessary.

I have not seen it enforced but several yeara ago the ATA rule books said the weapon could hold nor more than a certain amount, think a 870 or 1100 with a plug. Reason I remember was a person was saying that they had run into this rule being enforce and was told that technically the club did not have to allow a weapon with more that 2 shots capable. I have seen that outside the US but not here. My 391 was set up to accept no more than 2 rounds. That is why I remember. May have just been full of it but I have seen rules carried to the extreme before. Have not seen the current ATA eule book.
