New member here, I could use some advice. Just started trap/skeet shouting last year using my old 12 gauge pump. Looking to go to an o/u but on a budget. I’m down between a Mossberg Gold Reserve ($885) and a ATI Crusader ($450). I know both are made in Turkey. Is the Mossberg worth the extra $400?

Thanks for your opinions.

Do you have your heart set on something new, or is used OK?

If used is OK you might want to look at an older Browning Citori. You can find something for $1K and it will last.
I’ve been looking for used Brownings and other highly end o/u, can’t seem to come across any. I should add I’m 62 and will probably only shoot a couple of rounds 2 times a month. I don’t really need something that will last 50 years. I would LOVE a Browning or Benelli, don’t get me wrong.

I'm with the other suggestions. Recommend holding off until you find a Browning or Beretta trap gun. You might find that you shoot more and enjoy it more with the "right tool" for the job. I started with a Mossberg 500 pump and ate a lot of recoil until I moved on to a trap gun. Besides, if your 62 and in good health, you might still be shooting very competitively 20 years from now. At 62 your "young" in our sport.

Welcome to the world of trap.

You might consider asking around at the club where you intend to shoot. You could find a line on something used. That's how I located my first Citori. Even if you're not intending to shoot thousands of rounds per year, something like a Browning was intended for that duty and likely won't fail you at an inopportune time. An older one, properly cared for and maintained, would hold its value should you decide to send it down the road later.

62? You're only a few hundred days older than I am.

Honestly, don't buy either one. They both have the inherent genetics to make trapshooting miserable for you.

Buy an 870TB used in that price range and you'll enjoy shooting those four rounds a month. You might even decide you like it enough to increase the amount you shoot. Not likely with either of those O/U's.

If I had everyone of those gun that you mentioned given to me by people that bought them, hated them, and then bought something better I would be able to use them to tie up my tomatoes and not need the old steaks I have been using. Most people regret buying them just because they kick like hell and never shoot them long enough to deal with the issue of reliability.

Pheasantmaster gave you good advice. A used 870TB will give years of very good service and may be worth more in 5 or so years, if you decide to upgrade. A new Turkish made over/under, assuming that it makes it 5 years, IMO will depreciate a lot in 5 years.

You only need an over/under if you plan to shoot doubles. Given the cost pf targets and ammunition, you can shoot your way into the poorhouse by just shooting singles and handicap.

With an 870, Model 12, Mossberg 500 or similar gun, not to exclude BT99's, by shooting 1 ounce loads, recoil is very manageable. If you are used to shooting a pump gun, acquiring an over/under will not magically make you a better shooter.

A lot of today's great shooters cut their teeth on Model 12's and 870's.

I didn't start trap until I was 62 and I looked until I found my new/used Browning CXT, but a BT 99 would wotk great for everything except doubles. I love the gun, makes shooting trap fun
Good luck on your search and WELCOME to the forum.

Try reaching out to all the different vendors here on TS.com to see what used B guns they have in stock.

You should give serious thought to buying a new or used Beretta Automatic as well. If you buy a used one, you'll be able to sell the gun for what you paid for it at any time you to walk away from the sport. The shotgun will work great for all 3 games, and you'll be able to take it hunting too if you like. The A-300 is a great gun, and can be had for under 900 bucks. Of course you can find the A-400 in several different models for double the cash. Less if you try to buy used. Guns International has lots of used shotguns of all types for sale. Be smart and look up the dealers before you contact them to find out all you can about the dealer. Deal with AAA Better Business rated dealers and the like. All the dealers who are listed on TS.com are excellent and you'll have no worries if you deal with any of them. I guarantee you can find a nice O/U browning for a grand or so, is you shop around. Of course the Beretta automatic is a gas operated shotgun. This type of shotgun will take some of the recoil out of your shells. So they always are a softer shooting shotgun. Something to think about if recoil is a issue for you. Good Luck on your Journey!!! break em all jeff

If you really want an O/U, the cheaper ones are mostly field guns.
But if you also want to shoot skeet, you don't buy a trap gun.

In that price range, you might want to search for a used Miroku O/U, it's a quality copy of the Browning, at 2/3 or even 1/2 of the price.
