An absolute tragedy. This seems especially sad for sure. What should be more enjoyable than a day out in the field/woods hunting? Peace to family and friends.

Tragic and sad to hear. Thoughts and prayers to his family!

Terrible news.... RIP

Maybe he was holding onto the side of the muzzle using it like a cane and picking up shells? Cant imagine how this happened.

I'm willing to bet the news story has some "facts" mixed up. Aweful however it happened though.

More details from Italian reporting. Seems it was a rifle and he may have fallen.
Regardless, a tragedy. RIP.

From Italian web site "Firenze Post":
The accident occurred on Wednesday 5 January, right in a wood of Montecatini Val di Cecina. The young man was participating in hunting with some friends. The dynamics of the accident are being reconstructed, but it seems that the young man was injured by a shot from his rifle, in the abdomen and hand, accidentally started while he was bent over to collect the shells of the hunting trip.

From Italian web site "La Gazzetta dello Sport | Notizie sportive e risultati live di oggi" :
7 January - MILAN
Cristian Ghilli, 19-year-old world junior skeet champion, did not make it, who on Thursday was injured in a hunting accident in the woods of Montecatini Val di Cecina, in the province of Pisa. Last Thursday, the boy, after finishing a hunting trip with friends, bent down to pick up some shells when he fell and a shot went off from the rifle that seriously injured him in the abdomen. Immediately, hearing the blow, friends arrived who, after seeing Ghilli on the ground, called for help.

Very sad. I read on some of the Italian online news magazine that the dynamic of the accident is being investigated but from a first report it appears that it shot himself while bending down to pick some spent shells..it sound strange to me especially for a pro shooter. Allegedly, it occurred while he was hunting with a "group of friends" ...who knows. Having said that, freaky accidents do happen..About 30 years ago in Italy, my brother accidentally shot himself while hunting alone. He was trying to climb a small fence and he put his 12 ga Franchi laying against the fence post, under his wait the post moved, the gun felt, hit the fence and it went off hitting him in the upper arm and slightly in the upper chest. He collapsed after trying to reach his car but he was lucky because a teen age shepherd saw the entire event from half a mile away, understood what had happened and immediately gave the alarm. After several hours in the operating room he came out OK other than for a big, lasting scar on his right arm.

This very sad event is just another reminder to everyone, myself included, to always treat our beloved shooting gear with the utmost care and attention.
