Yes, Swampy is correct, IF the firearm is in a trunk or pick-up bed. ...If in an SUV or van where it is accesible, it must be locked. ...(I happen to drive a mini-van.)

From the NJ State Police website:

  • How do you transport firearms?
Firearms shall be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported. If the vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the passenger compartment, the firearm and or ammunition shall be in a locked container other than the vehicle's glove compartment or center console and kept farthest from the driver.

As a precaution, ammunition shall be transported in a separate container and locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported. Ammunition magazines may remain loaded during transportation and shall be carried separate from the firearm.

I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this but I feel like the balance is off on my Browning BT99. I did the home test of trying to balance it on my hand under the pin and it keeps falling to the barrel. Do I just put some type of weight in the stock to balance it or should I not bother?

Your reading to much into it. Forget about the balance. Get the pad you desire and go shooting. How would you balance it, put weight in the stock or some type of recoil reducer? Now, if you want to add weight to help with felt recoil or to slow your swing that's another thread.

I was thinking of adding weight to the stock to balance it out. But, you are right, I am thinking too much. Reading too many things and watching too many videos. I'll take your advice and get the pad and have fun. Thanks.

NJ specifies unloaded and in a locked case.

I use a soft case with a cheap $1.00 padlock. ....It meets the letter of the law.

My ammo is also in a locked container, but the keys are attached to the container.

Many guys at the club don't bother, but I drive 40 miles each way and don't need any hassles if I'm stopped.
I consider the trunk of my car to be a locked safe.

I keep my shotgun in an Americase/Negrini with combo locks, if the combination is easily guessable, for instance "000", it's still locked, no?
