Just got 10 lbs of Midwest MP BFS powder. Shipped to my door in four days. Has anyone used this powder? The only load data I can find is off their container and its only for 1 1/8 oz loads. I would like to load 7/8 oz. but can not find any data for anything other than the 1 1/8 oz. Would appreciate any info.

This is direct from their website:

"MP BFS Flake Shotgun Powder DO NOT ASK FOR OTHER LOAD DATA FOR OTHER CALIBERS OR CONFIGURATIONS Caliber - 12 Gauge Charge - 20.00gr Shot Weight - 1 1/8oz Shot Size - #8 Avg. Velocity - 1200fps This is a blended powder that has been tested based on the above data. Work up all loads minus 10% FREE SHIPPING AND NO HAZMAT FEE"

No primer, hull, or wad listed to get 1200fps @ 20 grains, or what the PSI is...

So you have NO clue what it really is. If I had to take a wild guess based on charge weight alone it may be close to Green Dot, but considering you don't "Work up all loads minus 10% " in shotshell, anything you develop will HAVE to be sent out for pressure testing first.

This is the worst "pig in a poke" I've ever seen in reloading. In my eyes this powder is basically worthless unless you want to spend a lot of time and $ in pressure testing it on your own.

That "free shipping and no haz mat fee" piece also is interesting. Is there a country of manufacture on the container? Also, please post a pic of it.

I also agree it's likely comparable to Green Dot or International, and likely has a burn rate too slow to be of use in 7/8 oz.

Not really, $25/lbs seems like an average price right not. And if it was, you pay it twice when you order 2 jugs.
It's not your average powder, its an unknown mystery powder that they likely bought by the ton. It's probably pulldown powder.

It's obviously baked in, they aren't loosing money selling the powder, and American Reloading has offered free shipping and hazmat on their powder for ages, so it's not a mistake.

Any update on your BFS experiment?

FWIW, I loaded 20gr in AA hulls, with CB1118 wads, and Cheddite 209 primers. Five rounds over a chronograph revealed velocities well under 1,200fps (1,004fps average).

I guess the next step is to send some rounds off for pressure testing.

Very sensible post, welcome to TS.Com. If you send some off for testing, please post your results.

Well, I can tell you for sure MP BFS doesn't work well with reduced loads. I loaded 17.5gn with 1oz #8 (WAA12L) in Fed and AA hulls and Cheddite 209s, and I only managed to dribble the shot out of the barrel. On 4 of the 5 rounds tested, the wad came out. The 5th squibbed, and when I opened gun, a fireball came out of the ejection port 🔥. I quickly unloaded the rest of the shells and changed my britches. The barrel was full of crusty muck.

I loaded a few more up the same as @Saluki91, so hopefully I'll see similar results. I want to stick around 1000fps for what I'll be using these for, so that might be the ticket. I'd be very interested to see the pressure testing results as well.
