Need Hodgdon Universal 1oz recipe.

I'm wanting to load Remington STS with 1oz lead, claybuster wads and Win 209 primers at 1200fps. This is Universal, not universal clays. How much powder and what Mec bushing would it call for?

I’ve never loaded Universal. It’s all I could find.

OK I'll bite!
My understanding is Hodgdon dropped the name Clay's, after International and Universal.
Said it was causing to much confusion. With that in mind, Universal and Universal Clay's would be the same powder.
It makes a great games powder, but not much registered. Especially in 1oz. but really nice for 1-1/4.

I just got a sleeve of 209’s from a guy that’s getting out of shooting due to expense. I also got an 8 pound jug of this Universal, which I’ve never used.

PS: Winchester 540 is WAY better for one ounce target loads.

Yes for 1 oz loads. It is better suited for 1 1/4 oz loads.

To rosies dad, There are a lots of recipes for 7/8 oz 20 ga loads. Also a few for the 3/4 oz 28 ga loads.

28 and 20 gauge. Loads for 12 gauge are for STEEL SHOT ONLY!! There are NO published loads by Hodgdon for 12 ga with lead shot!

Universal was a welcome competitor to Alliant's Unique when it became readily available in the early 90's. Comparable performance, but cleaner and better metering ... lots of people switched to it for the 20 and 28 gauge. Virtually nobody intentionally bought it for the 12ga target games. Of course, there were usually a dozen other choices available in those good ol days, and some of them were a whopping $10/keg cheaper.

Exactly, and the 16, I have several friends (really I do) that use Universal for 20, 28 and 16. In the 16 1 oz. loads are pretty low pressure at around 1200 unless you were smart enough to pick up a large bunch of magnum primers at some time in the past. I know a guy that did just that, he is pretty smart....

I prefer Green Dot in the 16 but I'm down to ~12 pounds of it. Last month I managed to pick up two 8 pound kegs of Universal. This winter I will be using it for the 20 when my International kicks off and also the 16 sooner than later. Unless I hit the Green Dot jackpot. Not going to hold my breath on that one.

Univeral is pretty hot. If you want to use it in 12 gauge, I'd suggest adding 6oz. of luke warm water to each pound of powder. Shake the container well, fill the bottle, and start cranking out shells.

Maybe you can buffer your 1 ounce shells with a 1/4 ounce of glitter since buffer is hard to find

This load will only work with mixed lead shot preferably 4's, 6's, and 8's. I have found it works best if you put equal amounts of each size. As far as bushing size I would use a 1oz. bar. Hope this helps.

Good 20/28 powder. Not good for even 1.125 oz, let alone 1 oz, It would be filthy and erratic. Maybe I would use it for heavy hunting 12 gauge loads. Come on over, I'll swap you some Titewad.

I still don't believe this is a serious post by the master of the less than serious post. In case it is though, Universal is much more of a 20 gauge powder and does well there. It is just a little to slow to make a good 12 gauge target load with. Now I do know a guy who would take it off your hands.

Need Hodgdon Universal 1oz recipe.
