Scott, it has to be the only reasonable explanation why K80’s blow up.

I’m still looking to buy one.

I haven’t read any replies to this thread so I’m sure this has likely been discussed but your main concern is the wood. Over the years it shrinks and screws become loose. This is what causes most failures, especially in LC Smiths. Make sure your screws are tight. I shoot low pressure loads only in my Elsy even though the stock was in good condition and has been glassed.

“The average shotgun shell when properly loaded has an initial pressure of 10,000 to 15,000 pounds…”

The barrels were Winchester Standard Ordnance (cold-rolled Decarbonized) Steel with a tensile strength of about 60,000 psi. The shell pressures were determined using crushers, and modern piezo transducer numbers would be 10-14% higher.

The 1897 was still available with damascus barrels after WWI, and still "bored for nitro powder"

Right now it made it to a USPS distribution center and went off the grid. Originally it was supposed to be delivered yesterday. It’s not scheduled to be delivered today. Just says running late. Ugh.

The guns may hold up, but what happens if and when they don't? I don't think it is worth the risk of the gun and possibly myself to tempt fate. For that reason, I use RST shells that are the proper length and pressure for an old gun. I have a few guns made before 1900 and absolutely love using them. The RST shells are a bit more than standard shells, but they are safe, hit just as well, and smell AMAZING in those paper hulls.
