Well 452 is similar to Red Dot in performance and 473 is similar to Green Dot. But since we don't know how much shot you want to use, it's difficult to search out actual recipes to furnish. Can we assume 12 gauge? Another difficulty is that those powders were obsolete and no longer being sold when the figure 8 wads were developed as far as I know. Depending on the quantity of powder, it might be worthwhile to make a guess and load some and send them off for testing.

Yeah your right...I am a dumb ass. I have been reloading and shooting for 45+ years now and have used both 452AA [back in the 70's/80's] and LOTS of WST the last 10 years.
If you look at a lot of WW data you will notice that the charge weights for these 2 powders often overlap. If you are careful and pay attention one could safely load a shotshell with these 2 powders with out blowing your gun up and/or load some to send out for testing. That is as long as you do not want to load a 1250fps handicap load at high pressure.
I am sure that some of the reloading police will be along shortly to proclaim my comments as Heresy and that I should be burned at the stake but I stand by my comments.
Buy we are not saying " just use a similar powder data" are we ?
There is 452AA data using Power Piston wads RXP12 and R12L.

I'm wanting to load 452aa & 473aa In a Remington sts hulls, w209 primer , Rem figure 8 wad for a 12 ga 1-1/8 ounce trap load. Can anyone help? Thanks
Doug, this is about the best I've come up with. As you can see, you'll need/should switch over to a WAA12 copy but that shouldn't be an issue. Look closely as one table list hull as RXP and the other Blue Magic. They claim both hulls are similar to STS when loading in respect to pressures.

No...you are not a "dumb ass", but you should not be giving reloading advice. Shotgun reloading is very forgiving for the most part. You can change a number of variables and still stay within and acceptable limit. But to suggest that you can switch from one powder to another because they are similar is just foolish. There is published data of +/- 2000 PSI difference by a simple primer change.

In your example....you are correct. The WST data and the 452 do intersect in many instances. BUT....452 might not have been tested in just "ONE" of the parameters of the modern WST data.

I too have reloaded for 45+ years from 25 ACP to 458 Win. Mag and everything in between (including all shotgun gauges). I am not the "reloading police" that you speak of , just pointing out a few thing.

Good luck and all the best.

I have probably 120 "cases" of 20 gauge that I loaded with 473. I will die before I ever shoot those up.

You gonna tell Curly that, too?
Now what have I done?? I just described a similarity of performance between powders and the fact that those two powders were obsolete before the figure 8 wad was offered. I said nothing about equivalency.

Nothing wrong. It's just that he was going off on acorange for what he said, which was similar to what you said, with the difference being one could infer acorange had added that WST is a direct substitute for 452. I don't think that was his intent.
You are one of the guys that everyone knows you know reloading, and I for one am glad you are a member here.

As I recall (its been nearly 30 years) WST was the replacement for 452AA. That is different from being a direct substitute.
