I'm tired of my gun slopping all around when performing maintenance/modifications.

Looked at the Tipton Ultra and Best cleaning vices but looks like a lot of plastic with less than stellar reviews.
Hyskore has a little beefier steel one that I'm considering but it's China crap with weak welds from what I've read.

The other option is to just build myself exactly what I'm looking for.....

Anybody have suggestions or what you've found that works well?

I made this. Portable, sturdy and can be clamped down. works great.

That's along my thinking of "building one" and I've been looking at the wooden vices on Amazon and other outlets. Thanks for the picture.

I certainly need something that'll keep a gun solid and secured without risking any marring or gouging.

I came waaay too close to dropping my gun last night in the shop when drilling the stock to fit a new pad. A hair more and it wouldn't have ended well at all. I have rubber mats around and under my benches but not worth the risk any longer. I've been lucky too many times!

I've tried a bunch of different holding devices over the years. Here are three examples. The first is a new super wizbang, multi adjustable, expensive vice. It is absolutely useless. It will not hold a round barrel or anything else I have tried to put in it. The second is a vise I use if I have to hold a complete gun with the stock still installed. It is old and works well. The last photo is what I wound up using for cleaning my shotguns. The black barrel holders move up and down so I can get it so the barrels are level. In front is a cleaning pad for the receiver and stock and the fore end. While the barrel is sitting after applying some solvent I can clean the action. Roll up the mat and put it in the red base and it sits on a shelf until I need it again. Sometimes simple is the best.

I had one of the red ones (MTN Caseguard I believe) and it did work well for cleaning, wish I knew what happened to it?? It's similar to what I have currently but I think I need to edit my thread title to more of a gun vice rather than for cleaning purposes...thanks for the pics, the second one looks handy.

The modified wood vices are good because they have limited clamping force. You have to be very careful with a bench mounted metal working vise. The one in the photo has aluminum jaws for working on gun parts. But you can easily squeeze a receiver or barrel and damage it if you apply to much pressure on the handle of a metal working vise. Look at the threads in Number 2's second photo. The threads on the bench vise are much finer and can exert a lot more force.
