Maybe at 40 yards...I think Neil had a gun that was nearly 90% (30 inch circle at 40 yards.)

At 35 yards, more likely.

80 is way more likely as great pattern at 35 and 40 yards. Neil's benchmark bbl was actually a Full Choke fixed 870 bbl

I have 2 single barrels that are fixed chokes of .040” and .042” and they both fall a bit shy of 90% patterns @ 40 yards inside a 30” circle. The tightest patterns are with the hardest shot in factory Nitro’s. I never felt that I was under choked even at the 27.

Remington has come out with new shot and very constricted chokes way beyond normal and are achieving the tightest patterns yet. They introduced it at the Shot Show this year. It’s horribly expensive at this stage but maybe the price will come down if it catches on.

I need to look on Browning's website and try to understand all these CX, CXT, CXS differences.
My delima is that I have a couple good field guns to hunt with. So I don't need a gun to fill that bill. However, I do want something that will be the best crossover style gun for trap and sporting clays...but I shoot more trap than any other clays sport. But, I'm also not shooting registered targets at this point so I am struggling to justify a dedicated trap gun.
Is it possible to go with a CX and get an add on rib that would make the gun better suited to rising trap targets, but able to be removed for a more flat shooting gun for sporting clays? Probably a stupid question
I am hoping to buy a gun and shoot it all season and possibly get into registered targets next year.
Any gun/load/choke combo or are you specifically wanting for trap using target loads?

Do you have a link or name on those very constricted chokes?
Just want to go read about them and the patterns they are producing.

You can go on their website and read about the shells and choke tubes for the new TSS shot-shells. The choke tubes are so tight it sounds ridiculous but the new Tungsten shot doesn’t deform like lead does and can tolerate the tight choke. The R&D department has been busy this time. Shot is heavier than lead so smaller diameter shot penetrates further than larger lead shot. Horribly expensive now with 5 shells per box. Only available in a half dozen loads now but is available with smaller gauges too. There is a video made at the Shot Show explaining it all but I’m not savvy enough to post a link. Maybe someone can that knows how.

A friend of mine has owned several Bruce Bowen SBT’s that make 90% patterns with Nitro 27s or older Federal papers. They make wonderful smoke balls from the 27 when pointed correctly.
While not legal for ATA targets, the WW Blind Side turkey loads have easily produced 90% or higher patterns in our turkey shotguns. From 40yds the average pattern is barely over a 20” circle.
The new Rem offering, the TSS is just as dense but has way more pellets due to them using smaller shot. The .410 offering is loaded with #9 sized pellets.

Not really...just cabin fever curiosity prompted by the thread regarding "practicing with tightest choke possible".
Your thought about buffered load echoed by Tim makes sense and is appreciated.
Yes it can be accomplished and with conventional components (ie no fancy shot).

Superxjeff who periodically posts here has also accomplished this performance level.

Hey Dave,
I would hate to lose you on this site by holding your breath until you turn a very dark shade of blue, waiting for that to happen!!!

I had an extra full choke for my Beretta 692 X-Trap that was easily above 90% at 100 feet. Pattern was done at 100 feet because that's the distance our still board targets are and it was easy to rest my piece of cardboard against those. I just used factory 1200fps loads and my own 1 ounce reloads. Didn't really use that choke much except for turkey shoots. Smoke is nice and all, but there's a point where I'd rather have a more forgiving pattern.
