The faster lead shot starts out at the muzzle the faster it slows down. The faster shot will always be faster but at longer distances it will slow down much more than the slower shot slows down.

From KPY Shotshell Ballistics.
1100 fps #8 shot at 40 yards is going 552 fps
1200 fps #8 shot at 40 yards is going 578 fps
1300 fps #8 shot at 40 yards is going 604 fps, has .86 energy and gets 1.02" of gel penetration at 40 yards.
1200 fps #7-1/2 shot at 40 yards is going 598 fps, has .99 energy and gets 1.10" of gel penetration at 40 yards.

The 1300 fps #8 shot started out 200 fps faster than the 1100 fps #8 shot, but at 40 yards it is only 52 fps faster.

The 1300 fps #8 shot started out 100 fps faster than the 1200 fps #7-1/2 shot, but at 40 yards it is only 6 fps faster than the slower starting #7-1/2 shot. The slower #7-1/2 shot has more energy and gets more penetration than the faster starting #8 shot.
so how fast is the target going at 40 yards and is the target falling as fast as the shot??

A standard 1200 fps load of 7 1/2's will drop 3.7" at 40 yds a nd it only takes .139 sec to get there .
Your 4 th shot in a Annie could be closer to 75 / 80 yds which would make the fall somewhere around 18"/22" but you had better have shot a pellet larger than 6's to have any kind of pattern left !
6's , 5's and 4's are the norm where I shoot Annies .

yeah I figured it would be close to 50 or 60 yards out of the house and if you are standing on the 27 yard line that makes a long shot and I also use 5s or 6s, but how fast is the target falling in comparision to the shot.

I'm with MG, recoil is not an issue but I shoot 1-1/16 of #8's @ 1100 fps from the 16 and 1-1/8 of #7-1/2's @ 1250 fps from HDCP. Funny when I score HDCP from the back you can tell who is shooting sloooow reloads. I didn't think it would be the case but it is noticeable.

Everyone has their druthers. I shoot a 1200 fps 1 1/8 oz at Sporting and Trap. I no longer load Big Medicine. The 1250's have enough more recoil to make a difference. A few on the Sporting course for the Big Boy targets are okay, but a steady diet of them gets old.

If I do shoot the 12 on the Skeet field, I keep a bucket of one ouncers loaded for that occasion. Same speed.

It would be interesting to know how many fellas load

I really don't know the numbers but I can tell you , you still have to be under the target , in most cases , farther than you think ! FWIW , staying on the line of the target with a compound lead is the trick , along
with enough experience shooting loads for the job . As they say , bring money you'll figure it out eventually ! OH , watch the wind and the Elevation you might be shooting at !
