I have also posted this thread on SGW.

I found 4 pounds of this powder stuffed in the back of one of my reloading cabinets, sealed in the factory containers. I have had if for at least 15 years and I know that it hasn't been made for almost that long.

There are two 12 gauge loads that I want to try. These loads are from the 1998 Accurate reloading manual.

The first one is AACF, w209 primer, waa12 or DR118 wad, and 21.5 gr. SOLO 1250, 1200 FPS and 9800 PSI.

The second one is Federal Gold Medal (Federal Top Gun with wound paper basewad), 12S3 wad, Fed209A primer, 25.5 gr SOLO 1250, 1200 FPS and 8300 PSI.

Because I have never used this powder how is it for a short yardage, 19 yds, trap load?

The Federal load seems to be a pretty stout with 25.5 gr of powder and the Winchester load isn't far behind it.

I was looking for an 1145 FPS load but they don't have one for the 1250 powder. That seems to be a little strange.

Any info will be appreciated.

In my never to be humble opinion, Solo 1250 was one of the best, if not the best, handicap powders ever. It is in its prime with 1250 fps loads. The Fed GM load will work very well for you. The Top Gun hull has a higher base wad than the GM hull.

It is extremely bulky, and I would say stack height is going to be an issue in the W-W hull.

The only regrets you will have is when the keg is empty.

I use to buy it in a 25# keg for $235 and thought it was just great. Then there was a price increase to where I could buy 700X in three 8# jugs for the same price. Didn't make any sense to shell out all that money at one time for powder so that was it for the Solo. Just go down a grain for a little slower velocity. If you just leaf through a Hodgdons or Alliant reloading manual you'll see any of the loads have about a 3 grain spread for different pressures and velocities. The Accurate manual is kind a sh!tty for different loads.

An Accurate ballistician told me that 1250 came into its own with 5/4 loads at 1250fps. He was right. I tried it in 9/8 oz loads and was not satisfied. I much preferred Solo 1000 for that. Since you have it, use it. Keep the pressure up so you burn all of it.

I'm still using up about 7lbs of solo 1250 but I am using it in 20ga and works great in the 12ga if you don't run the speed up around 1250+ as shooting coach
had stated with the pressures up over 10.000psi it gets very dirty. In the 20ga with 16grs in the gun club hull with a RXP20 wad and WIN209 primer it burns
very clean.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to load 1 1/8 at 1200 fps. I don't have the book in front of me right now but I think the pressure was listed at around 8000+ psi. A little left over schmutz will clean up pretty easily. I only have 4# so it's not near the end of the world for me.

I loaded some today in AACF hulls and Friday will be the day of reckoning for this stuff.
