We'll be competing at the 4-H Shooting Sports National Championship this summer at Heartland Public Shooting Park in Grand Island. Can we buy shotshells at the facility? or can non-residents buy local department store ammo without any special permits/licenses (aka Illinois)? Any advice would be welcome. We may also try to participate in the AIM state competition at the end of the week. This will be our first trip to Nebraska and are looking forward to it.

Can't speak to the particular facility but in general, you'll have no problem buying ammunition in Grand Island.
While you're in the area, and if time permits...stop by and visit with the folks at Hornady.

I've never been to Heartland Park so I don't know what they offer. Buying ammunition in Nebraska is no problem; we don't make you buy a hunting license first. We are not Illinois. When are you coming? Late June? I believe that the AIM state shoot is held in conjunction with the Nebraska state shoot at Doniphan. Welcome to Nebraska.

You can purchase onsite but would be better to hit one of the big box stores as in Walmart, as said above if you have time tour the Hornady plant also a great gun/pawn shop GI Loan stocks anything and everything Hornady makes. You won't need anything special to purchase ammo in Grand Island just proof your 21 years of age. Usually Walmart just asks for your birth date doesn't even check ID.

Why don't you try to contact Heartland by phone or E-mail and ask them. Also do the same with WalMart.
First it may be good idea to figurer out how many boxes of shells may be needed to make sure they have an ample supply.

There are plenty of places from Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Island to pick up target ammunition on your drive. Quite a few WalMarts along I-80, and big-name sporting goods shops in the Council Bluffs/Omaha area.

Very true. If you will be driving through Omaha you won't find a better selection of Winchester ammunition than at Guns Unlimited, which is just off I-80 on the "I" St. exit. GU also has a trailer at the State shoot in Doniphan.

As mentioned above, Boops not hoops Shooters Supply and G.I. Loan both have guns and ammo. From time -to-time at least on of the places has given discounts to H.S. and 4-H shooting programs. P.M. me if you want the numbers of either of these places.

For some reason, the shoot at Heartland Park, whatever it is exactly, is held the same week as the state shoot at Doniphan. Those of us going to the state shoot have learned to make hotel reservations early. I made mine over two months ago.

Heartland shooting complex ,has it all for shooting - rifle both big & small caliber + BB gun and even long range — trap— skeet— sporting clays - heck they even have cowboy action complex — nice club house and parking
we shot at doniphan several years ago and my friends wanted to go see the complex— wow what a shock when we saw so many states represented for this 4h shoot and i thot driving to sparta was a big deal
as stated earlier , shell purchases are easy in the corn husker state

Yes, late June. Looks like the 4-H shoot and AIM shoot overlap on Friday.

Wally, they also now have a bunker complex at the west end of trap range. Come and shoot some with us.

If you are coming from the East and travel thru Omaha, stop off at Guns Unlimited. It is a block off the interstate. They are huge supporters of all the Nebraska youth and high school shooting programs. I try to spend my dollars at places that support the sport. GU does just that. They will have all the shells you need at competitive prices. The gun rack could be a empty if the state shoot is that weekend but there will still be a few on the shelf.
