I have a new to me 1966 870 TB with the Monte Carlo stock. The original recoil pad is a brick. I took it off and tried a few off the shelf pads but nothing fit correctly. I'm guessing a grind to fit is my best bet?

And should I go ahead and put a Graco adjustable plate on it while I'm at it?

I'm kind of torn on that one. This is my trap shooting gateway gun. I'd rather not cut on the stock. Where might I find a proper fitting repro pad?

I assumed I'd need to cut it if I went with an adjustable plate. I'll just go with a grind to fit as suggested since the fit is pretty good already. I already know it won't be long until I upgrade the gun anyways. Thanks all.

Personally I would put a Graco on, ive had them on most of my guns and wouldnt change it up. I’ve also had Morgan’s too but not as satisfied as I have been with Graco products.

You don't have to cut the stock to put a pad adjuster on. Simply order a 3/4" pad instead of a 1" and maintain the same LOP. A modern Kick Eez or other quality pad that's 3/4" feels the same in recoil absorption as a 1" to me. Perhaps less as now you can put the pad where it needs to be.

I would recommend looking around your local club, and see what is around. Ask fellow shooters if you can mount their gun and feel how the pad interacts with your shoulder.

I recently switched to a kick-eez modified trap pad and it made a HUGE difference in comfort and overall on my shoulder at the end of the day. I used to have a "hotspot" where the toe of the pad was digging into the top of my chest muscle with a flat or standard curved trap pad. That is now gone because the toe of the modified trap pad is flattened off. A rocker would also solve that, but not everyone likes the feel of a completely rounded pad.

It's really all about comfort for you with this decision, we are all built differently.

WHY DO YOU NEED A PAD ADJUSTER????

They are great when they are needed but do you need one? There is no sense buying and having one installed unless it is necessary.

How tall are you?

The answer to that question will let us know if an adjuster might be beneficial for you.

Incidentally, I strongly suggest a flat recoil pad rather than a convex pad.

Recoil pad adjusters are helpful for canting the pad so it fits into the pocket that forms on your shoulder when you mount a gun. That pocket is NOT straight up and down; rather, it flows outward from your clavicle to your armpit.

For a pre-fit pad, check Limbsaver's website. They offer pre-fit pads for a lot of popular long guns and if they don't have one for your 870, they list the measurements of the pads they do offer. I needed one for a bench rifle and found one that is barely 1/32" larger all around. And their pads really soak up recoil!
