I'm considering a semi auto for the first time....I'm not familiar with them. Would need a "target" gun with wider rib, would like to find one lightly used, but made within the past few years....I need some specific recommendations....Thanks

For me, I'd just take my 1100 Comp. Synthetic and lower the comb from its trap setting and replace the full tube with the skeet tube, or whatever I though was appropriate for the sporting target predestination and have at it.

Had this one for 5+ years now, 100% happy with it.

Dolph, while I don't keep up with what's current, from what I gather, most, if any, current target semi autos do not come with wide/wider ribbed barrels. If you are set on wanting that wide/r rib, you are going to need to a) look for an older Beretta 303 barrel and build a gun around that barrel or b) send whatever barrel you end up with to someone like Simmons to get the rib width you want/need. I went the Simmons route with a few of my Browning Gold barrels as I prefer a 1omm parallel rib. If someone like Simmons could do a reverse tapered rib, like Perazzi is now offering on their new High Tech O/U, that would make things a bit lighter.

Beretta 303, 390 or the 391, I would check with ACSS under the vendor section and see what he (Wally) has to offer. He is a great guy to deal with and has more knowledge on Beretta autoloaders than anyone I have ever encountered. There’s a reason why Beretta autoloaders dominate the sporting grounds.

Shoot well! Mike

i sell to lots of sporting/skeet shooters—- 303 has a cult following
303 sport 28” - wide rib - mobil choke $975 + 25 shipping — wally riebesell - 660-744-4115

If I were you I’d go to a sporting clays shot and see what most popular semiautomatic is being used. You can probably handle a few from owner/vendor and decide. If you need a wider rib than a existing rib this might be a little costly unless you get a great deal on a used gun.

Can’t speak to semi’s For skeet but annoying for trap. I don’t care for the shucked hulls bouncing off & around me. it seems there are always jams that break the squads ruthym. Some jams require a partial breakdown in order to clear them. Ok for sporting clays when solo on a post if you have the patience to wait your turn while your pal struggles with a jam. I’m a patient shooter but it seems semi guns always have issues

I can't recall mine holding the line up since I switched to autoloaders in 2005, I believe a number of shooters don't pay attention to maintenance and shell choice and then everyone on the line pays the price, which I don't care for, either when I am shooting.

As for getting hit by empties, I don't like it myself, and I don't hit anyone with them, either; I make sure that's taken care of, even though this one will not hit the position next to me, anyway.

There was a recent post about Rem barrels rupturing, steel issues, micro fractures ?? I prefer a break open action, positive, safe & considerate. I was looking at the Berettas for upland birds but took my old LC SxS instead.
Maybe im old fashioned or narrow minded (probably the later) but hunting would be the only reason I’d consider a semi.

I also just bought 1 of
these 1 month ago. I shoot all the clay target games. adjust the gun to you and letter rip. Only thing I can tell you learn how to completely take gun down to keep clean. Not sure how the grime gets where it gets but it does. I ran 500 rounds through it last week I did clean it twice, I did it at 250 and 250. run it wet with rem lube. I ran every crap ammo out there the only thing I didn't like shootin was loads under 1150fps the gun will shoot them I just didn't do well with them. I think most problems you here about a semi auto is that people just don't keep them clean and they are there own worse Enemy. Only other thing is I am a reloader and sucks picking up shells on your doubles.

Well said.-- I shot an 1100 for several years. Went to pump guns but I am probably switching back to the semi auto except for doubles due to recoil and shoulder issues. There will always be people who Don't keep their gun in good working order and cause problems as well as using junkie ammo but,I've been held up on the line more by people driving swelled empty hulls and stuck wads out of a break open gun than I ever have by a semi auto. As far as being hit by empties I use a shell catcher but on the rare occasion I do use the SA for doubles, the knock down pin drops them forward and down , nowhere near the next station.

I had real good luck with Remington 1100’s. They shoot great. Just be careful when you’re on the trap line with them and try to not hit the guy next to you with the hulls.
I have a browning “gold” sporting clays model which has been discontinued- dont know why- beautiful wood and no recoil. It Had higher ratings than my benelli super sport. (Also great gun)

On the trap line- absolutely be respectful of others and use a shell catcher. a rubber band (or gum band as they say in Pittsburgh) will do till you get a real shell catcher! Right Chief?
