I recently added a Perazzi MX8 to my collection and the wood is less than desirable. Looking to upgrade it but I am starting to see talk of type 3 or 4 wood? What are the differences in the type and how do I tell which one I have? Any other big lessons I need here before buying wood?

KY Perazzi,
It is my understanding it has to do with the forend lug. The older MX-8's, Mirages, Comp 1's etc had a type 3 forend lug. The stocks themselves should all be interchangeable with any drop out trigger Perazzi. With that said, usually minor fitting will be required. I own a 1976 Perazzi MT-6 and a 1975 ( type 3 lug) MX-8 Ithaca import.

There are a lot of offerings regarding used stocks on Gunbroker and ebay.

I am sure someone more knowledgeable than myself can offer a serial # when the change from type 3 went to type 4.

Good luck, you've acquired a great gun!

It's pretty straight forward. The type 3 lug is a post rising straight from the silver soldered connection with the barrel and an L shape "hook" facing forward but no protrusion to the rear toward the receiver. The type 4 post has the same forward hook but also has an rectangular extension toward the receiver.

But that only has to do with the forend. The stocks are the same configuration but do usually require a little bit of fitting.

As mentioned above, most MX-family stocks will bolt up without too much of an issue be it a Type II, III, or IV. Where it get's interesting is in the forearm selection per MX Type, and even per generation in Type IV. Barrel lug Type and location will dictate which forearm iron is compatible with which type of forearm wood. (that's when the addiction starts, LOL!) There a several knowledgeable Perazzi experts on here like Steve W, JACK, and more who offer lots of advice, plus the archives have tons of info.

Also, there's several competent gunsmith's who can modify wood/metal to accept new stocks or barrels also.
