Is it customary to tip a shooting instructor? If so what percentage is appropriate? Does this vary by discipline (trap, skeet, sporting clays)? Does this vary by individual instruction vs. group instruction? Thanks, in advance, for any insight into this issue. JPM

I've taken 3 trap training courses from professionals and did not tip nor see it as being necessary. I tip for good services while out dinning and for a good hair cut. I never tipped any of my professors or instructors while taking technical training. I never received tips while teaching college courses or doing technical training for businesses. I do recommend providing accurate compliments and recommendations for instructors who have done a good job.

I wouldn't tip any professional who I contracted for service, whether that's a doctor, plumber or shooting instructor. They're rates tend to be quite high as it is. Imagine slipping your cardio-thoracic surgeon a sawbuck after he makes his post-op rounds, "Thanks for the triple-vessel bypass, doc - here's a little something for ya!". Now a minimum-wage service worker who lives off of tips and provides good service (delivery boy, waitress, caddy, etc.), sure.

Hey Lama! How bout a little something for the effort?

At the prices it costs to go to a clinic, I don't think they are relying on tips to get their next meal or to put clothes on their back. I have taken 2 clinics from 2 different professionals and the thought never crossed my mind to tip. I doubt it will in the future either.

Can't say about a shooting instructor but if I feel like I would like to tip someone where it may be a little unexpected I tell them I would like to buy them lunch and hand them a $20.
Not a tip, just a nice gesture.

I taught a beginners shotgun class at BGSL in Wilmore KY on Saturday. The 11 year old broke 3 targets and he gave me a High Five at the end. I sure made over him when he broke a target. I also worked with his mom, dad, and 20 yo cousin all of which had big smiles and had a great time. Happy pupils was my tip.
I've installed enough bad habits in shooters over the years that it will greatly reward the pros trying to correct them. I would think they might slip me a few dollars since I am still working at my day job.
