What is the difference between WAA 12 wads and the WAA12sl wads? I have a lot of the WAA12 wads and want to go to 1 oz loads but most data shows the WAAsl wads for 1 oz loads.
What is your load? Like others have said above, if your 1-1/8 ounce load fits properly in your cartridges and you simply put in less shot, you will have some really dished crimps.

Downrange has a big variety of wads suitable for 1 ounce loads. Have a look at their website.

kshock- you didn't mention the hull you wanted to use. I reload Win. AA-HS hulls. The WAA12 works well in that hull for 1 oz and the WAA12SL works well for 7/8 oz loads and have no dished crimps using a Grabber. The winchester hulls are available on the ground at my range so that is all I load. Try some 7/8 for practice and you will be pleased.

This is the answer. Use the AAHS hull and a bulky powder, such as Red Dot or Clays. The AAHS hull loads a bit differently and takes a wad with a shorter crush section than the Rem hulls or the old AACF hulls. If you use a regular 1 oz. wad, you will run into stack height problems. The 2 conventional ways to reduce the stack height are to use the DRA12 wads or to use a wad designed to hold 1/ 8 oz more shot than you are dropping. In your case, using the AA12 instead of the AA12SL will be perfect, so long as you are using a bulky powder.

I've looked at the DR website, and it does seem easy to find the wad I want. The problem I've found is that DR distributors don't always use the same numbers/descriptions/colors that DR uses. That makes shopping for DR wads a real PITA.

Hmm. I have not experienced that.

Sorry, out shooting practice rounds. I am using Red Dot in AA Super Handicap (gray) hulls. I loaded a few at one oz and took them to the pattern board. Did not dish the crimp and they patterned just fine. Time to start volume loading. Thanks for the input. Wish you guys could straighten me out on shooting handicap now :)
