I seldom check beads anymore, because most of my guns fit me. Usually I can tell when I mount the gun if it is where it should be, If something does not feel right, sure enough, the center bead is not where I want it. It's just one more thing you can use of ignore, up to the shooter.

I noticed as some stopped this chalking 3" from the end of the barrel , while others , only chalked to last 14"......?
I don't think the coloring of a rib or barrel had much to do with a mid-bead being put in play. I do think that under certain back grounds, the white chalk made it much easier to get a reference on a hard flying angling bird? I can't see how the white chalk had much to do with elevation of POI as does that infernal mid-bead farce?

Oh I'm sure you're right on all points going towards a mid bead but with the understanding the gun "FITS" reducing the glare might of been all that is used for ?
I assume most really good shooters don't check to see if the beads are lined up......:badguy:

If more people would get their gun shooting where they look and smoking targets REGARDLESS of where the mid bead is located they'd be far better off. I understand that sometimes a new shooter wants a reference to prove his gun is mounted correctly and seeing a mid bead directly behind the front bead can be used to see if the shooter is looking directly down the barrel as long as the mid bead is not to the side of the front bead. Taking the matter further and trying to have the mid bead and front bead stacked in a perfect fig.8 and STILL having the gun shoot to the proper p.o.i. for that shooter is an excercise in madness. It CAN NOT be done for EVERYONE regardless of adjustable ribs combs, etc. People have different sizes of heads and amount of space between cheek and eyes and some crawl the stock and some don't. T he ONLY way to get that magical combination for most folks is to first get the gun smoking targets and then REMOVE the mid bead and drill and tap a location for it that gives you your perfect fig.8. By the time you do all this crap you should have shot enough to automatically mount the gun straight and learned how your gun looks when its set up to smash targets and you won't need to rely on the beads. The BEADS ARE NOT SIGHTS . Its a SHOTGUN NOT A RIFLE..

Back when old live bird shooters only had ONE bead , you'd see some chalking-up the rib . I noticed as some stopped this chalking 3" from the end of the barrel , while others , only chalked to last 14"......?
Makes one think it was the beginning of the 2 beaded guns ?
There is a gentleman on this site that made me two real ivory beads for eell that are great

As a pistol shooter for decades, I really struggled with the whole "bead sight picture" thing. I tried to "line up" the beads by looking at them-that is, by having my eyes focus on them-and then look downrange for the clay.

Disaster. Of course.

Now (and only in the last couple of months) I ignore the beads completely, instead I focus on consistent gun mount, weight distribution on the feet, and ALWAYS look elsewhere than at the beads.

I actually don't know what the beads look like when I hit a clay.

Pattern your gun and get it to shoot where you want it. After that, don't ever look at the beads again. If the gun fits properly, concentrate on the target coming out of the house, not on the beads.

Exactly this
