I use a different criteria for my worst shotguns. My criteria applies only to me. My worst shotgun was a beautiful Holland & Holland that I had custom fitted in England. Regrettably, the gun fitter insisted that the stock be made so that it fit me when I used his style of shooting and not my style of shooting. The birds I shot at with this gun were very happy with my selection. They could fly by me in total safety. The H&H was quickly replaced by a very good Rem. 870.

The second worst gun I had was a Winchester M-21. Bough the gun in rough exterior condition. Made a custom stock from high grade walnut. I engraved the gun and had some nice gold inlays. Finished with a really nice slow rust bluing job. It was to be my doubles gun. But, the recoil from the first shot nearly caved in the side of my head and I had no chance of ever hitting a second bird. I did shoot five pair of doubles before I put the gun down never to be mounted by me again.

Worst guns? Damn I have couple of those mentioned. A Boito sxs in 20. Cheap and not very pretty for sure but it is my rabbit gun when not hunting over someones dogs. It was skinned up when I got it and I put a few on it myself. The first Pheasant I ever shot was with a JC Higgins 16 ga when I was about twelve in 1957. It was not a ringneck but a Golden, lots of pheasnt still around then in Northwest Ohio. My Dad bought it for about $27.00 or so. I still have it in the safe. Lots of memories. A friend bought one of those plastic stocked Stevens in 12 ga. I think I shot it once, hurt like hell. I much prefered my JC Higgins to it. Another school mate had one of those Noble 410,s we talked about it during our 45 th Class reunion a few weeks ago. He still has it and we chuckled about the rabbits he would miss by forgeting to take the safety off. Hunting rabbits one time with two of my cousins and I had the Higgins and popped a rabbit and of course had shucked a shell in the chamber before picking up the rabbit. There I was stuffing a bunny in my pouch with my left hand when they kicked out another one. I raised that old clunker one handed and rolled that rabbit also. They gave me no end of grief for that one! Bill

Interesting, but there is a group of good skeet shooters at our club who formed the B.A.S.S. club...Bolt Action Skeet Shooters club. They have great time looking for and shooting bolt action shotguns - in all gauges - 12 to 410 - and do quite well. I always thought Krieghoffs were over-rated, based on the number I have seen break down in competition over the years. Oh well... What is the old saying: "One man's trash is another man's treasure"? Guess that is why there are Edsel or Nash Rambler collectors. Best Regards, Ed

My worst gun ever, hands down, was my first left handed shotgun, a benelli super black eagle. I bought one of these cow pies when they first came out because benellis reputation for not jamming. That P.O.S jammed every single time. It almost never fired the fist shot unless you hammered the bolt handle forward right before you shot and then it never, and I don’t care what load you were shooting, never cycled the second shell. I sent it back to benelli twice and got the same lame, you have to let the action slam forward BS both times but the gun still wouldn’t cycle so I traded it in for a Mossberg and some money back. Best trade I’ve ever made.

take your pick- Noble (S&W 916) pump or Winchester 1200. I worked in the DS shop and it gave me great pleasure to take as many 1200's out of the hands of the troops as I could. NASTY!!

Another vote for the Spanish Ljutic knock-off which some guy was trying to unload on some unsuspecting pigeon at the Grand.

Winchester 101 was a gun that cleared my nasal passages better than anything else I ever used.

Worst double......Stevens plastic stock 311, ugly and poorly balanced. Worst shotgun over all.... early 70s Stoeger Coach Gun with rabbit ears. It would hang or double at will...very scarry. Had a Sears Best Grade single barel with Damascus barrel from about 1904. It would open itself with every shot and it leaked gas from the joint between the action and the barrel. I suspect this was an OK gun for the first ten years of its life but by the time it came to me it was a wall-hanger only.

Newport 16 guage that belonged to my great-grandfather. It has a skinny stock and the barrel you can shake from side to side on he hinge pin, even though the pin appears tight. I kicks like a mule and sits in my gun shelf as a part of antiquities.
