So I'm in a pretty unique situation. I own one of the Ares SCR semi-auto rifles. Basically it's an AR15, but it uses a Remington 1100 stock. The purpose is for "assault weapon" ban states that illegalize semi-auto rifles w/ a pistol grip or make them legally difficult to own (NY, CA, MA, ect).

At any rate, I've had mine for I think about a year and a half, only fired about 60 shells through it. They haven't been available for most of 2016, and demand for them in states where they are necessary is quite high right now. On a whim, I went on gunbroker and noticed there wasn't one to be found. Searched the sold listings, and am seeing that the bone stock version is going for 2x what I paid for mine, and mine has quite a few upgrades, so I can likely sell mine for at least 2x what I have into it.

It is my only semi-auto centerfire rifle, and really don't want to be without one. Unfortunately being in NY it isn't as simple as buying another AR to replace it, so whatever is to replace it pretty much has to be non-AR. Ruger Minis are out, as are SKS. I had thoughts of a M1A, and could probably almost swing basically a straight swap, but by the time I buy a mount, scope, and rings I'd probably have to kick in the better part of a grand to make it happen.

Any other thoughts? I really don't want to cash out (if I do, and I don't have something nicer to take it's place I know I'm going to instantly regret selling it), and wasn't even considering selling it until I saw what they were going for, but I'm more viewing this as a possible opportunity to swap one semi for another and make an big upgrade in the process.

Ended up throwing it up on gunbroker, will see what happens. These originally sold in the $800ish range, one sold a couple hours ago for $1300, so I put mine up w/ an opening bid of $1400, buy it now of $1500.

If it sells and I don't have anything else scoped out I'll grab a Springfield M1A to replace it with for now, or possibly the FNAR Competition 308.

I'd opt for the M1A in a heartbeat. You can get into mount, rings and scope for much less money than you might think. I read an article by Paul Helinske, M1A sniper-on the cheap, or all the way some time ago. Google it and see what you find.Amazon was selling mount, scope and rings at a ridiculous price at one time.

CZ Scorpion is a really cool buy right now, but that's s sub gun. The CZ Bren had the same controls and layout but is in the rifle calibers.

Of all the post AR modern rifles the one that stood out to me at Shot Show was the Robinson XCR. Controls were exactly what you would want and you could swap calibers by swapping uppers.

If that doesn't float your boat I would get on the list (think they might be shipping now) of the Desert Tech MDR. Its what the Tavor should have been.

You may want to read the OP again. I don't believe either of those rifles fit into the requirements of his State.

Skeet,
take the money. The highs and lows of the market are pretty severe right now. In states where they can be had regular AR pricing is heading down at a pretty good clip with saturation.
For a specialty item like yours with a limited audience its likely on an upswing that may not last.
You didn't say what the purpose for your use of it was. But Im surprised no one has mentioned the M 1 Carbine. If you are replacing the Ares, going with a classic may fit your needs.
In CT we can buy pre ban colt lowers and build away. Its a premium but if you just have to have one they are out there. I still haven't had to have one nearly as much as some of the nice shotguns or smith revolvers out there on the racks.

What are you going to use it for? Hunting? Range toy? Both the M1A and BAR are great rifles.

It would really help if you gave an intended use and/or caliber you were after.

Sure an M-1 Garand, or an M1-A1 - even an M-1 carbine - but your use will impact that choice.

I guess a BAR would work too.

What about a pump?? (e.g., Remington 760 or 7600)

I think you are right on the idea of dumping the one with crazy value and replacing it. Would it be worth waiting a few months into the Trump administration to see what changes he creates in firearms law??

Two favorable possibilities. One, the costs drop as panic buying stops. Two, even better, would be a Federal law overturning many of the bans and giving you access to a 'real' rifle...

Well, SCR is sold. Guy is semi-local so I'll be meeting him early next week.

Gun is/was primarily a range toy, but with thoughts of a defensive rifle if necessary. Would like to stay in the same thought process for the replacement.

Leaning heavily toward M1A at this point. Choices are kinda limited since I can't have a muzzle device. Only choice to make is 22" barrel or 16" barrel, will probably go w/ 22" (wish they made something that split the difference), and wood or synthetic (will most likely get wood).

As long as everything pans out, I'll be kicking in 18 bucks to make the swap :)

I have two M1As. If you want to hunt with it I'd recommend the M1A Scout.

BTW they are heavy. Nine + pounds. The muzzle brake can be removed but I think the front sight is attached. I would guess that someone makes a front sight to fit your needs.

Get over on the M14 Forum and post your questions. There are a lot of knowledgeable guys who will help you.

BTW you guys in NY need to start voting Republican. Get rid of the liberal Democrats who continue to pass stuid gun laws.

The citizens of the State of New York are imprisoned by the voters from two, relatively small landmass, areas. Albany and New York City. Build some good walls, add some AAA and SAM Batteries, cut off electric and drop in a half million guns with ammo per borough and poof, problem solved in short order.
